Let's hit the road now!
Travel Tips for 5-Day 4-Night Northwest Tour

The timing of your Northwest trip doesn't depend solely on the dry or rainy season but rather on the best time to enjoy nature's wonders. If you love the sight of terraced fields, plan your trip from August to October. In early spring, around February, you can enjoy the magnificent beauty of cherry blossoms and plum blossoms in both Moc Chau and Sapa.
Summertime brings vibrant rhododendron flowers. Autumn is when the terraced fields burst with life. Winter carries snowflakes that melt the hearts of travelers, perhaps making it the most beloved season.
Accommodations in the Northwest region will develop slightly more than the Northeast due to tourist centers like Sapa, Mai Chau. So, finding a quality hotel or resort won't be difficult. The challenge here is the possibility of fully booked rooms, so you should book your hotel on Klook to find suitable accommodation at an affordable price. Most young travelers tend to choose homestays when visiting the Northwest because they are relatively cheap and offer incredibly scenic views.
If you're traveling from other provinces and not from Hanoi, don't forget to book your flight tickets early, especially during special occasions like holidays or Tet (Lunar New Year). Tip for booking cheap tickets: Late-night or early morning flights tend to be cheaper than other times, and you should also take the time to monitor the airline's promotional policies.
Temperatures in the Northwest will be quite low regardless of the season, so don't forget to bring warm clothes, scarves, and a comfortable pair of shoes.
Transportation Options When Traveling to Northwest Independently
Although the Northwest has challenging roads, with the development of tourism, there's no shortage of transportation options for you to choose from. Below are some suggestions depending on the preferences of your group.
1. Train
You can embark on your 5-day, 4-night Northwest adventure by train. This mode of transportation is extremely safe and offers scenic views of the mountains and forests along the way. The only downside is that it takes longer to travel.
2. Bus
From Hanoi, there are plenty of affordable bus routes to the Northwestern provinces. This backpacking travel style is also favored by many young travelers, but you need to carefully manage your luggage or opt for a Northwest trip by limousine or luxury sleeper buses for comfort.
3. Motorbike
Renting a motorbike is only for adrenaline junkies and those who have visited the Northwest many times. To navigate through the winding and challenging roads, you need to have a very steady hand. Although quite dangerous, you'll undoubtedly gain many unforgettable experiences in life.
4. Private Car Rental
Klook still encourages you to choose day tours in the Northwest departing from Hanoi or rent a private car with sightseeing spots to save time and transportation costs. You have full control of the itinerary and under the guidance of knowledgeable local drivers, the trip will become even more special.
Detailed & Cost-saving 5-Day 4-Night Northwest Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi - Mù Cang Chải - Sapa
To kick off your 5-day, 4-night Northwest journey, you will depart from the capital Hanoi. This challenging 300km route takes you to the most majestic landscape in Vietnam. You can also consider 3D2N Sapa Discovery with Ethnic Villages or Private Trekking Tour to Ma Tra and Ta Phin Villages highly popular on Klook to diversify your trip.
Khau Pha Pass

Đèo Khau Phạ, one of the four most beautiful mountain passes in Northern Vietnam, is also the most dangerous and spectacular route on National Highway 32. Each winding turn passes through dense forests, taking you through many famous landmarks such as Tu Le Commune, Che Cu Nha,... to see the terraced fields of the H'Mong and Thai ethnic groups.
Mù Cang Chải

Mù Cang Chải is famous for its terraced fields, which resemble silk ribbons wrapped around the hillsides, creating a stunning effect under the sunlight. Whether you visit during the harvest season in September and October or any other time, this destination always offers breathtaking scenery.
Ô Quy Hồ Pass
After passing through Mù Cang Chải, we will continue our journey through the Ô Quy Hồ Pass, also known as the Hoàng Liên Sơn Pass. This pass is located on National Highway 4D, north of Lai Châu, and is recognized as a National Landscape Heritage.
If you want to explore Ô Quy Hồ Pass for longer, choose the Private Tour to Silver Waterfall and Dragon Cloud Suspension Bridge by Klook departing from Sapa on Monday to visit more spots around the pass.
Cat Cat Village

Traveling along the O Quy Ho Pass, we will stop to visit Cat Cat Village, the main destination of the day. Cat Cat Village is home to the H'Mong community, dating back to the 19th century. To this day, the village preserves traditional crafts such as linen cultivation, cotton growing, weaving, and bronze casting. Explore the activities in the craft village and buy handmade products as souvenirs!
Finally, we will return to Sapa town for lunch, free exploration, and overnight stay to recharge for the next exciting days ahead.
Day 2: Sapa - Fansipan Mountain - Lai Chau
After a satisfying breakfast, you will move from Sapa to Fansipan Mountain. In the afternoon, depart for Lai Chau, stopping by local markets and villages along the way.
Conquering Fansipan

Conquering the majestic Fansipan Mountain, also known as the “Roof of Indochina” towering 3143m high, has never been an easy task. But now it's within reach thanks to Sun World Fansipan Legend Cable Car, which takes you directly there. Sitting on the cable car, you'll witness the complete beauty of Muong Hoa Valley and Hoang Lien National Park.
Or if you have good physical strength and a spirit of adventure, #teamKlook can 'lightly book' the 2-Day 1-Night Fansipan Trekking and Camping Experience instead of the first 2 days, which is also very exciting.
Love Waterfall

Love Waterfall originates from the top of Fansipan Mountain. To get close to the waterfall, you will need to hike through the forest on a rocky path for 30 minutes. The scenery along the way is extremely pristine with dense primeval forests leading to the final destination, a 100m high waterfall. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water as there are no shops inside the forest.
Ban Si Thau Chai
Departing to Lai Chau, today's route is one of the most beautiful mountain roads in the country. When you reach Tam Duong, make a stop at Ban Si Thau Chai, the 'Sleeping Village' nestled amidst the mountains of Northwest, home to the Dao people. Many young travelers come here for paragliding, off-road motorcycle racing, costume photography, and exploring the beauty of the wilderness.
Sin Suoi Ho Village
Not far away, also within the territory of Lai Chau province, is Sin Suoi Ho Village - the village of the Mong ethnic community. A sign of recognition when arriving at Sin Suoi Ho is the many orchids planted along the road into the village. The prominent activities here include cloud hunting on the mountain peak, weekly market held every Saturday, enjoying the traditional drinks of the village people, watching cultural performances, admiring cherry blossoms, and visiting the Heart-Shaped Waterfall.
Continue moving to the center of Lai Chau city, check into the hotel, and rest. Evening is a great time for strolling, visiting the night market, and dining on Lai Chau specialties.
Day 3: Lai Chau - Dien Bien Phu
The theme of the third day's journey is to explore history through famous destinations in the victorious battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Today, Dien Bien Phu is surrounded by majestic mountains and peaceful ethnic minority villages, making it hard to imagine that this was once the site of a brutal 57-day siege.
A1 Hill
The strategic location of A1 Hill played a crucial role in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. The complex trenches at the center of the French defense system at this location have been faithfully recreated and restored for visitors to explore. Just a few hundred meters to the south lies the A1 Hill Cemetery, where you can pay your respects to the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the battle.
De Castries Bunker

This bunker served as the command center for the French forces in Dien Bien Phu, led by General Christian de Castries. Despite suffering damage during the 1954 battle, the structure and layout of the bunker remain intact to this day. From any high hill in the area, we can see this famous bunker, where the military had to endure 55 days and nights before gaining control.
Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum
The Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum was built in 1984 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the victory in 1954. By 2013, the museum had been expanded to cover an area of 22,000m2, exhibiting over 1000 artifacts related to the war.
At the end of the day, you will dine, enjoy free time, and stay overnight in Dien Bien Phu City.
Day 4: Dien Bien Phu - Son La - Moc Chau
On the morning of the 4th day, we will travel back to Son La province, specifically to Moc Chau district. The natural beauty of this place always leaves a lasting impression on visitors, making them eager to return again and again.
Pha Din Pass
After breakfast, you will depart for Son La along the winding roads of Pha Din Pass, also known as Pha Din Pass. This pass lies on the border between Dien Bien and Son La provinces, part of the 'four famous passes' of the Northwest region. Take a break to capture photos and admire the peaceful villages nestled below the valley.
Son La Prison
Son La Prison relic is located on Khau Ca hill, built by the French colonialists in 1908 to detain revolutionaries. The prison was almost completely destroyed during the war and partially restored to preserve artifacts and serve visitors. Next to the prison area is the Son La Museum displaying prehistoric artifacts, tools, and costumes of ethnic groups in Son La.
Moc Chau Tea Hill

The Moc Chau Plateau is renowned for its vast, lush green tea hills, making it the largest tea-growing area in Vietnam. Leveraging its advantages in soil fertility and climate, locals have transformed traditional tea cultivation into a prominent Moc Chau tourist destination, both domestically and internationally. When visiting Moc Chau Tea Hill, you'll have the opportunity to savor various delicious teas, admire the tranquil and refreshing scenery of the tea fields, and purchase tea products as souvenirs.
Ang Pine Forest

Don't miss the Ang Pine Forest Tourist Area in Moc Chau because the road leading here has been widened and is very easy to navigate. Inside the tourist area, there are many interesting spots for you to check in, such as the Chimi Strawberry Garden, pine hills, canola flower fields, and Phoenix Park,...
Dai Yem Waterfall

Dai Yem Waterfall in Vat Ban cascades down 100m in two white layers, majestic yet retaining a poetic charm amidst the mountains and forests. The waterfall creates a stunning background for photography enthusiasts seeking a 'quality' check-in spot.
At the end of the day, you return to the central hotel in Moc Chau town to spend the night.
Day 5: Moc Chau – Mai Chau – Hanoi
On the last morning of the 5-day, 4-night Northwest journey, we leave Moc Chau town to reach Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province, and return to Hanoi within the day.
Thung Khe Pass
Before entering Mai Chau district, you will pass through Thung Khe Pass. Don't rush, take a moment to admire the scenery, and capture photos amidst the white mountainside and morning mist. Thung Khe Pass is beautiful but also quite dangerous due to its steep cliffs and numerous hairpin turns.
Ban Lac Village

Ban Lac is located in Mai Chau valley, home to the White Thai ethnic community. Visiting Ban Lac, you'll enjoy bamboo sticky rice, experience the daily life of the gentle and friendly ethnic people. The locals will grill meat, cook bitter bamboo shoot hotpot, and perform traditional gong and dance performances for tourists.
Ban Pom Coọng Village

Adjacent to Ban Lac, Ban Pom Coọng is also a village of the Thai ethnic group but less known to tourists. People in Ban Pom Coọng often perform traditional dance performances. Don't refuse to taste can wine, a common drink used in gatherings as a welcoming drink for visitors.
Go Lao Waterfall
Go Lao Waterfall is only 13km from Ban Lac, resembling a strip of white silk amidst the rugged mountains. The waterfall is still quite pristine, untouched by human activity, making it suitable for adventurous young people.
