While these updates bring numerous features for iPhone and iPad users, Apple still has more planned for 2022. Here are 5 new features and applications for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 that Apple has promised to release by the end of 2022 through upcoming updates.
iPadOS 16: External Display Support
One of the standout features of iPadOS 16 is that iPads finally support external displays, providing users with a more expansive display space. This feature is integrated into Stage Manager, a new multitasking window system specifically for iPad models using M1 and M2 chips.
Although Stage Manager is available with iPadOS 16.1 released earlier this week, it currently does not support external displays. Apple has postponed external display support until 'later this year,' so users of iPad M1 and M2 will have to wait until iPadOS 16.2 is released to experience this new feature.
Embark on Gaming Adventures with SharePlay
With the upcoming SharePlay feature on iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, gamers will soon unite over FaceTime to delve into their favorite games alongside friends and family. This functionality will extend to games integrated with Game Center and supporting multiplayer capabilities. In iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, Apple broadens SharePlay's horizons by seamlessly integrating it into apps like Messages.
Introducing Freeform: The Collaborative Workspace
Apple's forthcoming app, Freeform, slated for release later this year, aims to enhance productivity by providing a centralized hub for teams to collaborate effortlessly. Featuring shared notes, files, web links, sketches, documents, photos, videos, and more, Freeform will be available across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms.
Emergency SOS via Satellite
Designed exclusively for iPhone and set to launch with the next iOS 16 update in November, users of compatible devices will be able to send emergency SOS messages via satellite in areas with no cellular coverage. Initially available in the US and Canada, Emergency SOS via Satellite will be complimentary for the first two years, with Apple yet to disclose the service's maintenance fee beyond the third year.
Harmonious Melodies by Apple
In August 2021, Apple acquired Primephonic, an online service specializing in classical music. In their announcement, the company stated they would release a dedicated Apple Music experience designed specifically for classical music enthusiasts in 2022.
With only a few months left until the end of this year, Apple has yet to release this app. However, traces of its development have been found in the iOS 16 code, suggesting that we might see the release alongside an upcoming iOS 16 update.
