To enhance the multitasking capability of Chromebook, Google has introduced a new feature supporting split-screen mode on the latest Chrome OS Dev channel through a new flag called 'Split view in Tablet mode', which is only activated on Google Pixelbook.
Pixelbook is set to receive a split-screen feature soon.
François Beaufort's Announcement on Google+: Split Screen Feature Coming to Google PixelBook
Pixelbook, also known as Chromebook Pixel, is Google's premium Chromebook laptop series pre-installed with Chrome OS on Linux, capable of running Android apps downloaded and installed from the Google Play APK Store.
How Does the Split Screen Feature Work on Chromebook Pixel?
According to François Beaufort's explanation, after activating the 'Split view in Tablet mode' flag, users need to tap the icon '[]||' at the bottom right corner of the screen to view all active windows, then divide the designated areas.
Not all Android apps support the split-screen feature. So if you're planning to try out this new feature, don't be surprised if it doesn't work on some apps.
Nevertheless, this is still good news for Chromebook users, as Google may expand the split-screen feature to other devices, possibly upcoming Chromebook models in the next few months when Chrome OS 64 is released on the stable channel.
Additionally, according to some related reports, François Beaufort mentioned that Chrome OS is adding hardware-acceleration decoding and encoding functionality in the 'Video Acceleration Information' section on the chrome://gpu page, being tested on the Chrome Canary experimental channel.
Splitting the screen on a Windows computer is not difficult. However, the upcoming addition of the split-screen feature to Pixelbook indicates that Google's essential feature updates may be somewhat 'lagging behind' compared to Microsoft.
