Google refers to these 3D images as Cinematic photos, a novel type of image that the app displays as part of its Memories feature. This new capability allows you to relive your cherished memories in a vivid and authentic manner every time you interact with a photo. Simply put, it presents a regular photo from your library in 3D form, even if the original photo lacks any depth effects.
Google Photos achieves this by utilizing machine learning to infer the depth of the image and generate a 3D representation of the scene. Subsequently, the app employs smooth virtual camera panning motion to the image, akin to techniques used in movies. This instantly creates a vibrant 3D effect for the 2D image.
Google Photos will automatically generate Cinematic photos when this new feature rolls out to users next month. You can enable/disable this feature at your preference by tapping on your profile picture and then navigating to Settings > Memories > Advanced > toggle Cinematic photos.
Moreover, the company is also adding new themes for Memories. Now, you'll be able to reminisce about important people in your life, and in the near future, Google Photos will soon showcase memories of your favorite activities, such as baking or hiking. Additionally, you'll be able to adjust the timeframe and select specific subjects in the app's settings to avoid displaying photos you'd rather keep hidden in your library.
