The luminous Apple logo was once a widespread sight in coffee shops worldwide in the early 2000s.
Apple filed the patent in May 2022, recently published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Described as a patent for electronic devices with a backlight, it holds the potential for a bright future.
The illuminated Apple logo on the back of MacBooks has become an icon in the laptop industry (Photo: Slate)Quoting a section from the patent, it describes, 'The back of the product may have an icon. Symbols or other structures in the device provide a partially backlight-reflective mirror. The mirror may be a neutral color like light gray or may be a non-neutral color like yellow.'
Note that the three engineers mentioned in the patent only joined Apple in 2018, a considerable time after the illuminated Apple logo was removed from MacBooks. This suggests it could be an entirely different technology.
Current MacBook models sport a metallic Apple logo with no backlighting. The first MacBook with a glowing Apple logo was the 3rd-generation PowerBook G3 introduced in 1999, setting the stage for Apple's laptop legacy for the next 16 years.
In 2015, Apple phased out the illuminated logo from its MacBook lineup, replacing it with a shiny metallic logo similar to the iPad. Since then, Apple has yet to introduce a new MacBook generation featuring the glowing logo.
