During the day, Jiufen appears quite ordinary, with souvenir shops, clothing stores, and food stalls. But as soon as the sun sets, Jiufen transforms into a dazzling scene reminiscent of a glamorous ancient courtesan preparing to welcome guests in old-fashioned mansions from romantic novels or martial arts stories. Red lanterns illuminate the narrow and steep streets, creating a mesmerizing ambiance. The small, wet, leaf-covered paths amidst the rain, couples strolling hand in hand, sharing warm moments, and the radiant smiles are truly adorable. Walking slowly on the stone steps, observing the colorful umbrellas below from a higher vantage point, it's a picturesque sight.
My favorite spot is the teahouse, sipping on a pot of tea while watching the rain through the window frame. The cool air outside contrasts with the warmth of the tea, the steam rising gently. Gazing into the distance, you can see the Keelung harbor or simply enjoy observing people walking down the street. It's serene, peaceful, and leisurely. Jiufen Teahouse, established in 1991, is my go-to place. The wooden decor is simple yet cozy, while A Mei Tea House, the second teahouse, stands out with its red lanterns and romantic windows shining brightly at night. In any teahouse, I find a corner, facing the sea, brew a pot of tea, savoring the aroma, contemplating life and fascinating journeys. There's nothing quite like it.
Jiufen is tiny, a half-day stroll covers it all. On sunny days, having breakfast and coffee or tea, choose a place with a view of Keelung harbor and the slow-moving procession of vehicles climbing to the summit. Alternatively, you can climb Jilong Mountain, also known as Big-Belly Beauty Mountain, for a panoramic view of the town and the sea. On clear days, you can even spot Taipei and Taipei 101.
If you visit Jiufen, pick a day with drizzling rain, chilly weather, and stay overnight. Enjoy a hot cup of tea by the window, watching the rain or take a leisurely stroll on the cobblestone streets with trickling water. You'll discover a charming and lovable Jiufen, answering why it's a favorite among many foreign bloggers.
