Explore Monkey Mia – A Tourist Destination to Admire Dolphins in Australia
Thanks to the visiting dolphins, Monkey Mia attracts over 100,000 tourists to the beach every year. Here, visitors can observe, interact with dolphins, and learn about their living environment.

According to various sources, since the 1960s, wild dolphins at Monkey Mia have become increasingly familiar with humans as local fishermen often feed them. Gradually, more dolphins came here, and soon this coastal area became famous and turned into a tourist resort.

However, by the 1980s, researchers noticed a trend where adult dolphins became more dependent on humans for food, leading to an increased mortality rate among dolphin calves. Consequently, conservation agencies began making adjustments to dolphin feeding practices.

Currently, the number of dolphins visiting Monkey Mia beach each day is decreasing, and they are only fed a small portion to ensure they continue to forage and teach necessary skills to their offspring.

There are approximately 200 bottlenose dolphins living at Monkey Mia, but only 5 adult female dolphins are fed by humans. Therefore, among the tourists visiting here, a few lucky ones will be allowed to feed the dolphins under the supervision of beach staff.
