During the development of this first M6, BMW devoted considerable effort to create the ultimate sports GT of its time. However, the most significant upgrades lie in the drivetrain and gearbox. The BMW M635SCi version in the US utilizes a suspension system with stiffer Bilstein shock absorbers, larger front sway bar, large ventilated disc brakes, and a standard limited-slip differential to prevent traction loss.
The BMW S38B35 engine produces a maximum power of 256 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and torque of 330Nm at 4,500 rpm, paired with a 5-speed Getrag 280 manual transmission. By the standards of the 1980s, the performance of the first-generation BMW M6 was outstanding, accelerating from 0-96km/h in 6.8 seconds and achieving a top speed of over 242km/h, making it the second fastest commercially produced car by BMW at that time, second only to the BMW M1.
Only 5,835 units of the M635CSi were manufactured globally from 1983 to 1989, with approximately 1,677 of these distributed in the North American market. This rarity, coupled with its aesthetically pleasing design inspired by sharks and its exceptional performance, has made the first-generation M6 a sought-after collector's item in recent years, with steadily increasing prices over the years.
