Khau Phạ Pass is situated at an altitude of around 1,200 meters above sea level, on National Highway 32, spanning approximately 30km. The pass is located on the border of Mù Cang Chải district and Văn Chấn district in Yên Bái province. Khau Phạ Pass is renowned for its winding curves, challenging turns, and towering cliffs.

The name Khau Phạ is derived from the language of the Thai ethnic group, meaning 'heaven's horn.' It is named so because the peak of this pass rises into the sky like a horn, often shrouded in mist and fog, hence called Khau Phạ. The most impressive moment when conquering Khau Phạ Pass is immersing oneself in the incredibly majestic natural scenery.

Khau Pha Pass stands out as one of the most winding and steep mountain passes in Vietnam, conquering the peak of Khau Pha, the highest mountain in the Mu Cang Chai region. Khau Pha Pass unfolds amidst a high plateau surrounded by overlapping mountain ranges, winding roads through ancient forests, and terraced fields of H'Mong and Thai ethnic groups.

The weather in the Khau Pha Pass area remains cool throughout the year, although the temperature is significantly lower than other places due to its location in the northern part of the subtropical region. A day in Khau Pha experiences all four seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, often shrouded in mist and clouds. In some exceptionally cold years, the pass is covered in snow.

It can be said that Khau Pha Pass is most beautiful during the ripe rice season, around September to November, when the rice on the terraced fields turns golden yellow. This is also the time when many adventurous tourists come to conquer this pass and witness the most stunning landscapes of Mu Cang Chai during the ripe rice season.
