In the month of August every year, if you happen to be in Japan, don't miss out on this remarkable festival!
If you find yourself in Tokushima, part of the Shikoku archipelago in Japan, in August, make sure not to overlook the “Awa Dance Festival.” Witness the synchronized procession of the traditional “Awa Odori” dance, perfectly capturing the spirit of the martial arts nation.
Awa Odori Matsuri, also known as Awa Dance Festival, stands out as one of Japan's most renowned traditional dance festivals, both nationally and within the Tokushima province. In Japanese, Odori means dance, Matsuri translates to festival, and Awa refers to the former name of Tokushima prefecture.

This dance originated in 1586 during the inauguration of Tokushima Castle, where Lord Hachisuka Iamasa generously provided alcohol to the city's residents. As the spirits soaked in, people spontaneously rose to dance to the music, giving birth to the Awa dance.
Every year around mid-August, the entire Tokushima province comes alive with the festive spirit of this celebration. The most prominent in scale and reputation is the festival organized by the city of Tokushima. Over time, the festival has extended beyond Tokushima and is now held in various locations across Japan, including Tokyo. For those unable to visit Tokushima, Koenji in Tokyo hosts the most famous iteration of this festival.

During the festival, groups of dancers known as “ren” participate, and this grand spectacle attracts over 1,000 “ren.” The female dancers exhibit graceful and agile movements, while the male dancers exude strength and fiery intensity.
The musical instruments used in the festival typically include the shinobune flute, traditional Japanese shamisen with three strings, Japanese drum (wadaiko), and the gong (shouko).

Immerse yourself in the lively sounds of various musical instruments as dance groups gracefully move along a lengthy street, their faces beaming with smiles and voices echoing in harmony with the music. The Awa Odori festival captivates a diverse audience of locals and international visitors. People often arrive early to secure prime seating, some bringing blankets while others carry foldable chairs. Equipped with drinks and snacks, they leisurely dine and socialize until the festival commences around 7 PM. Spectators are encouraged to join the dance groups to enhance the festive atmosphere.
