Linus Torvalds, the mastermind behind Linux kernel architecture, just dropped some bold comments on the state of the Trusted Platform Module security feature on AMD's Zen architecture CPUs. In an email to the open-source Linux developer community, Torvalds proposes, verbatim, to 'disable the stupid fTPM HWRND feature' as bug-fix updates from AMD often prove ineffective.

Instead of relying on the hardware-based fTPM security, accompanied by the HWRND random number generation feature, Torvalds suggests opting for RDRAND. Although slower than HWRND, RDRAND effectively resolves the stuttering issue, a notorious characteristic of systems equipped with Ryzen or Threadripper CPUs.

The HWRND-related glitch with fTPM on Ryzen chips surfaced around last year on Windows and extended to Linux systems by February this year. AMD's kernel patch didn't completely fix the issue, leaving many users grappling with stuttering even on high-performance hardware.

Torvalds feels compelled to speak out as even the Rembrandt generation CPUs, including the Ryzen 6000 series APUs in laptops, continue to face fTPM troubles despite using the latest firmware. Users since then have reached out to Asus and other manufacturers to explore options for disabling fTPM in the BIOS.
