II. Exemplary Essay on Argumentation about Self-Esteem (Standard)
Humans are constantly perceived and evaluated in various aspects, from outward appearance to academic achievements, and interpersonal behavior. However, the true value of a person originates from the beautiful values hidden within the soul, and one of these values is self-esteem. Those who comprehend the meaning and value of self-esteem are the ones who determine their own worth, consistently striving to preserve and enhance it, progressively elevating their self-worth.
Self-esteem, originally a Sino-Vietnamese term, translates to self-awareness, preservation, and emphasis on one's issues. Broadly speaking, self-esteem means always being attentive, preserving the good values within oneself, always valuing one's personality, not allowing oneself to live deviantly, or letting external influences affect them, even in the most difficult circumstances. Individuals with self-esteem are those with ethical qualifications, high moral standards, living compassionately for others as well as for themselves. Respecting oneself is simultaneously respecting those around, refraining from unfair judgments or treatment of others because respecting others is also respecting oneself. Individuals with self-esteem are generous, not calculating for petty gains, not succumbing to temptations that could impact their dignity, avoiding ridicule. In some respects, in the past, self-respect was often associated with a noble, uncomplicated lifestyle, detached from worldly affairs. However, in the present world with numerous changes, having self-esteem is not about living separately from the world to protect personal identity but about integrating and harmonizing while still preserving one's dignity and honor, earning the love and respect of others.
Self-esteem is manifested in many aspects of one's life. Firstly, it is evident in living honestly with oneself, family, and society, always making an effort in work, being truthful, living straightforwardly, consistently asserting one's talents and enthusiasm. Avoiding deceptive and unclear actions to prevent misunderstandings, behaving sincerely with others, not creating baseless assumptions or judgments about others. When we unintentionally make mistakes, we should not avoid them because it's not easy to hide. Everyone has keen eyes to see, sometimes they remain silent not because they are unaware but simply waiting for us to admit it. When we openly admit faults and willingly correct them with a warm, sincere attitude, we not only protect our dignity but also make others have a more favorable view. The mistakes we make are easily forgiven when we protect our own dignity and make others have a positive impression. Self-respect is also evident in personal life and activities. A person with self-respect will know how to organize their life neatly, plan, appreciate time and their health. They have an awareness of protecting the common good, environment, and the interests of the community even if it requires sacrificing personal interests.
Self-respect goes beyond merely preserving one's character and self-worth; it also reflects a profound sense of national pride and deep patriotism. Remaining vigilant and fighting against any actions that may affect the country, always respecting and preserving the unique cultural identity of the nation. Having a spirit of learning and embracing the new and positive aspects of humanity but without adopting foreign ideas, westernization, or neglecting the 4000-year-old cultural heritage of the nation. Instead, focusing on development, always remembering that we are the people of Vietnam, the descendants of Lac Hong.
Self-respect can be considered one of the criteria for evaluating human character. Those with self-respect often possess a beautiful soul, having received excellent education from family, school, and society. Individuals with self-respect lead a noble life that commands admiration and respect from others; they refrain from making casual judgments. Self-respect helps individuals plan better, knowing what to do and what not to do, making their lives and work smoother. Conversely, those without self-respect, lacking in preserving their dignity, being jealous, selfish, and malicious, tend to degrade themselves. In society, not many people appreciate such individuals. Those who don't respect themselves and others find it challenging to gain support and approval, prone to being excluded in the workplace, in education, and in any other group. If in a society everyone is aware of the value of self-respect, then it's inevitable that society will become much more civilized, beautiful, thanks to the cultured lifestyle and behavior that each person gives to others. Reducing selfish competition that hinders development, eliminating social complexities and troubles can be achieved by cultivating self-respect.
An important thing to remember is not to confuse the two concepts of self-respect and self-esteem, arrogance, and self-importance. Compared to self-respect, which is about preserving dignity, enhancing personal value, arrogance is a small-minded, selfish feeling, even weakness. Always wanting to protect one's personal ego, not willing to sacrifice personal interests. Easily influenced by external factors, whether right or wrong, evident in the fact that arrogant individuals never accept and correct their mistakes; instead, they display anger, weakness, expecting sympathy. This clearly is not an expression of self-respect.
Self-respect is one of the most crucial factors that contribute to the value of each person, guiding individuals towards positive thoughts and actions to protect and elevate their self-worth, beautifying their own souls, and simultaneously contributing to the beauty and development of society, enhancing its civilization and strength. Every day, individuals need to cultivate self-respect for themselves, even from the smallest things in life, ensuring that even a discarded piece of rubbish leaves behind the fragrance of good virtues emanating from our own hands.
