The International Border Gate Lao Bao is situated in Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province, right on National Highway 9 from Dong Ha to Laos. Lao Bao of Vietnam, along with Den Savanh of Laos, forms a crucial economic junction in the East-West economic corridor.

Since the government issued regulations for the encouragement of economic and commercial development in Lao Bao, enterprises and traders participating in trading activities in this area will receive certain benefits as prescribed by the Vietnamese government at that time, along with incentives under the special economic development policies for the region.
By 2008, Lao Bao border gate was confirmed by the Prime Minister to be planned as one of the 9 border economic zones prioritized for comprehensive development of infrastructure, regulations, measures, and policies.
Perhaps the biggest draw of this economic zone lies in its prices. Visitors to Lao Bao not only enjoy a wide variety of goods, both imported and exported, but also benefit from lower prices due to the absence of import taxes or value-added taxes.

However, it's important to note that according to regulations from the Ministry of Finance, tourists visiting the economic border zone are only allowed to bring in duty-free domestic imported goods worth no more than 500,000VND per person per day, excluding the value of goods purchased under the Tax-Exempt Restricted Goods category. If purchases exceed this limit, you will be required to pay import duties, VAT, and special consumption tax (if applicable) for the excess according to current legal regulations.
