The exact origins of Ao Bà Om remain a mystery to Trà Vinh locals. Nevertheless, numerous oral legends have been passed down through generations, with one particular story being the most renowned.

Legend has it that in ancient times, Trà Vinh suffered from severe water scarcity every dry season. Fields turned arid, vegetation withered, and the locals' lives were deeply affected. A regional leader decided to organize a competition between men and women to dig ponds to combat the drought. The side that dug deeper, faster, and wider would win.

The men, overconfident in their strength, worked leisurely. Meanwhile, led by Bà Om, a Khmer woman, the women tirelessly dug day and night, completing their task before sunrise. Bà Om had lanterns hung on tree branches to trick the men into thinking it was still nighttime, allowing them to work undisturbed. The men's negligence led to their pond being too shallow and quickly filled with soil. In the end, the women emerged victorious, and Bà Om earned the right to choose her husband. Thus, the name Ao Bà Om was given to this historic site, which continues to exist to this day.

Just a few hundred meters from Ao Bà Om stands Trà Vinh's most revered ancient temple, Chùa Âng (Khmer: Angkorajaborey). According to tradition, the temple was built at the end of the 10th century and has undergone several renovations. The temple not only showcases the architectural style of Khmer temples in Southern Vietnam but also serves as a unique center for culture, art, and religion.

With its charming landscape and tranquil atmosphere, Ao Bà Om has become an ideal place for locals and tourists to relax and unwind.
