Step back 300 years with Shirakawa-go ancient village
Gifu is the capital city of Gifu Prefecture in Chubu. Unlike the bustling pace of major cities, Gifu exudes tranquility and the nostalgic charm of old Japan.
The highlight of Gifu is the ancient village of Shirakawa-go, meaning 'village of the white river', located in the northern part of Gifu prefecture. This village has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. It is one of the oldest two ancient villages in Japan with 100 thatched-roof houses, featuring unique architecture. Due to its special geographical location, situated at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level, the houses here all have steeply sloping roofs, resembling two hands clasped together. Every year, Shirakawa-go is blanketed with thick snow for over 5 months. Therefore, this steep design aims to prevent snow from piling up on the roofs. Shirakawa-go ancient village is likened to a real-life fairyland, where space and time seem to stand still to make way for tranquility.

Despite receiving about two million visitors annually, Shirakawa-go is still carefully preserved to avoid reckless tourism development. Currently, this ancient village is included in the list of special heritage sites that need protection in Japan.
The peaceful Takayama mountain range
Most of the main attractions of Gifu prefecture are concentrated in the northern region with famous towns like Takayama and the Shokawa valley area. On the way to Takayama, visitors will pass through a very beautiful village with uniquely shaped houses.
The romantic route from Gifu city to Takayama, winding between the two branches of the Hida River, crosses cities and small villages along the way. Hida-Kanayama village lies right on the Hida River branch, boasting a serene atmosphere with its tiled roof houses.

The historic district along Sanmachi Street, also known as Hida Takayama Old Town, is one of the must-visit spots that tourists shouldn't miss here. Hida Old Town is the heart of the castle city and is considered the commercial hub of Takayama. Here, there are many shops selling sweets, handicrafts, liquor, and local delicacies such as Mitarashi Dango rice cakes and Hidagyu beef. Visitors can stroll around, enjoy the local cuisine, or choose souvenirs at the shops along both sides of the street.
Gifu is one of the captivating destinations nestled in Chubu, where travelers can leisurely immerse themselves in the passage of time in a serene atmosphere, reminiscent of ancient Japan.
