Katsuoji Temple is renowned as a prayer sanctuary adorned with thousands of Daruma dolls.
Embark on a Japanese journey to explore Katsuoji Doll Temple
Perched on a mountain, Katsuoji Temple is surrounded by lush forests, creating a natural mountainous oasis. Known as a lucky temple, many people visit to pray for blessings in the New Year.

Katsuoji Temple dates back to the 8th century, originally named Mirokuji and later renamed Victory Temple (or Katsuoji). Notably, the temple is home to thousands of Daruma dolls – the symbol of luck in Japan.

So, in Japanese travel, when exploring Katsuoji Temple, tourists will easily encounter Daruma dolls everywhere, from the main hall to places like roofs, rocks, and staircases within the temple grounds. Daruma dolls are based on the image of Bodhidharma – the founder of Zen Buddhism in China. These round, red-painted dolls with no arms or legs, large black eyebrows, and no pupils are a distinctive Japanese tradition.

Discover Japan by visiting a temple where, when you wish for something, you get to paint the eyes on a Daruma doll and concentrate on your prayers while doing so. Once your wish comes true, complete the other eye and place the Daruma doll anywhere in the temple.

Furthermore, the attraction for tourists visiting Katsuoji temple is the picturesque four-season scenery. Each season brings a unique beauty. If you set foot here in spring, you'll be able to admire cherry blossoms covering the entire temple. In autumn, you'll witness the red leaves falling everywhere, especially on a poetic path of red leaves. Or in summer, the vibrant camellia flowers will showcase their beauty all around this temple.
