During the years of the anti-American war, this tourist destination and the people of the sandy region played a part in the historic victory of the nation. The tunnels, with an estimated length of about 20km, were constructed from 1965 to 1967 (the most intense period of the anti-American war).
Shaped like a chessboard with depths ranging from 1m to 1.5m, the tunnels consist of various functional areas such as food storage, command bunkers, border bunkers, medical bunkers, and combat bunkers. Serving as a stronghold for the densely populated Tam Ky area, the tunnels provided a strategic base for the people of Tam Ky to resist the enemy.
It can be said that nowhere else has the sacrifice and loss of our people been as significant as in the Ky Anh tunnel area. Just in the small Thach Tan village alone, which the tunnels pass through, more than 90% of the population participated in the revolution, including 200 martyrs and 18 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers.
If you have the chance to visit the sightseeing spot Ky Anh underground, perhaps not everyone can fully imagine how this tunnel system endured the shelling and bombings. Concealed within its present tranquility are countless moving stories of the days when Ky Anh tunnels and the people of Tam Ky faced life and death together.
Today, much of the tunnels have been destroyed, leaving only a short section in Thach Tan village. However, due to its historical significance and unique architecture, this place has transformed into an enticing tourist destination in Hoi An for travelers exploring the beautiful land of Quang Nam.
