Explore Quang Tri and Enjoy Traditional Seaweed Cakes
The Cua Tung area (Gio Linh district, Quang Tri) boasts a plethora of seaweed varieties. Along the rocky shores stretching from Cua Tung Beach to Moc Bay is where seaweed flourishes. Seaweed harvesting has also become a distinctive feature of the local community.
They can create many dishes from seaweed, but the signature dish in this region is the rustic seaweed cake.

Harvesting seaweed requires considerable effort. People must go when the sun is shining brightly and the tide is low, usually around 1 pm on the fifteenth day of each month. Harvesters must also be accustomed to the waves, each rock formation to know where the water is deep, shallow, or where there is abundant seaweed.
After being harvested, seaweed can be soaked in water and marinated with a bit of ginger to eliminate any fishy smell. It's then soaked in cold water, rinsed with mild salt water, and finely chopped. Afterwards, the seaweed is put into a pot and cooked over a gentle flame until tender. Salt is added and stirred until the seaweed thickens to the desired consistency.
The preparer scoops portions of seaweed into a bowl lined with leaves and waits for it to set. When eating, you simply roll each piece, dip it in sugar, and enjoy the delicacy.

For many travelers, seaweed cakes might not be immediately appealing in taste but they are refreshing and nutritious. Once you've tried them, you won't forget the flavor.
You can enjoy seaweed cakes at the Cua Tung fish market or various restaurants within the province. Many families earn a high income from seaweed harvesting. You can also buy seaweed and make it yourself, with an average price of about 250,000 VND per kilogram.
