Hang De Cho – Nature's Hidden Gem
Hang De Cho Waterfall – the most primitive waterfall in Vietnam, not only is it beautiful but the journey to the waterfall is also the most dangerous in Vietnam.
Overview of Hang De Cho Waterfall
Hang De Cho (also known as Hang Te Cho) is a hidden waterfall in the old forest of Tram Tau district, with a height of over 100m, located at an altitude of 1800m. The Hang De Cho waterfall flows vigorously, creating wind and blowing away the white foam. Standing about 10 minutes' walk from the waterfall, you can still hear the sound of the waterfall rushing down.
Humans seem tiny compared to nature's grandeur

The rock where everyone checks in is covered in moss, making it very slipperyThe road to the waterfall is extremely dangerous, known as the 'Four Great Places' of Northwest Vietnam, including: Hang Te Cho, Phinh Ho, Lang Nhi, Ta Si Lang; both routes are located along the mountain slopes leading to the Hang De Cho waterfall; the road twists and turns continuously, with red dirt roads, rocky paths... driving requires steady hands, never underestimate the sharp turns.
On the left side of the road is Lang Nhi, on the right side is Ta Si Lang - both located along the mountain slopeHang De Cho waterfall has been known for a long time but remains an extremely pristine waterfall area, where there are no houses near the waterfall, only a small path from Lang Nhi. At the foot of the waterfall is a large lake area, with many large rocks for checking in. The water under the waterfall flows slowly, not as fierce as when the waterfall cascades - just about 100m from the foot of the waterfall, the amount of foam is enough to make people damp.
Hang De Cho is an appealing destination for those who love off-road sports, hiking, camping to enjoy the pristine nature.
The best time to visit Hang De Cho waterfall
Summer to autumn, from July to early November, is the best time to visit the waterfall. Hang De Cho is ideal during these months with warm sunshine, perfect for conquering the waterfall.
Another observation is that the rainy season in the North is unpredictable. Sometimes it rains continuously for 2-3 days in the midst of summer, and in autumn, it can rain for 4-5 days, with sudden downpours. Therefore, it's essential to keep an eye on the weather for easier travel.
Location of Hang De Cho waterfall
Hang De Cho waterfall is located in Ta Si Lang commune, Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province. It is 35km from Nghia Lo town, 70km from Tram Tau town, and approximately 210km from Hanoi.
From Nghia Lo town, it's about 35km to get here according to the map. The first 25km of the road is quite easy, with about 5km of continuous uphill climb reaching an altitude of 1800m. There are many continuous sharp turns. The next 5km of the road start to get difficult with downhill slopes, dirt roads, close to cliff edges, and the final 3km is downhill on rocky terrain, extremely dangerous, requiring a firm grip on the steering wheel and constant focus. Going downhill is tough, but going uphill is even harder - that's why this route is for adventure enthusiasts, meant for locals rather than weak drivers.
The road leading to this gate is already challenging dirt road
The dirt road is quite muddy, making it even harder to travel when it rains
There are many sections like this
This is the end of the dirt road, once you see the wooden sign, turn right. This section leads to the rocky terrain, which is even more challenging than the dirt road.
This marks the beginning of the final stretch, with rocks scattered everywhere. The difficulty and hardship are all concentrated in this last section. If you're not brave enough, it's safer to walk.

Alternative travel suggestions in Yen Bai
For easier access to conquering Hang De Cho, you should opt for Thao Nguyen buses from Hanoi to Nghia Lo booked on vexere.com. Upon arrival, booking accommodations through the Mytour app and renting a vehicle here would be more convenient for sightseeing and experiences.
From Nghia Lo town, you can visit Hang De Cho waterfall, bathe in the hot springs of Hoc Van Chan with just 30,000 VND per person; the area remains crowded even at 8 pm, and it gets even busier in winter. Enjoy the scenery and cloud hunting at Lau Camping.
Seeking picturesque views or adventurous conquests is what you seek on every journey exploring Vietnam. For me, the two destinations of Hang De Cho waterfall and Van Chan tea hill are the most enticing when combined in an exploration trip to Yen Bai.
