Unlike typical Saigon tourists who seek the bustling beauty of downtown areas like District 1 and District 3, a group of international travelers has ventured into the distinctive and equally exciting experiences in Thủ Đức – a suburban district of Saigon.
1. Indulge in delicious and affordable seafood.
It seems challenging to immediately explain why there is a street named after the renowned scholar Einstein in a somewhat remote place like Thủ Đức. However, the proximity to several universities, high-tech parks, and a future subway line passing through here adds an interesting connection.
We came across Biển Đông Seafood thanks to the recommendation of Paul Blake – an American, an English teacher at a school in District 9. Blake mentioned that District 1 looked too Western, so we followed his advice to try beer and seafood here.
'I think this is a fantastic area,' Blake continued, 'You can enjoy great beers here, and I love the cafes in this area.'
Here, we indulged in exquisite seafood at surprisingly affordable prices. All six of us savored a variety of dishes, including Grilled Squid, Snails, Fish, Beer, and more, all for just 343,000 VND.
Address: Biển Đông Restaurant, 8 Einstein Street, Binh Tho Ward, Thu Duc.
2. Sip a cup of coffee in a beautiful and tranquil setting
If you desire to escape the hustle and bustle of noisy eateries and relax in a serene and gentle atmosphere, Tram Coffee is the ideal choice. Owned by the screenwriter Le Kim Hung, it's no wonder the space is beautifully designed. Outside, the charm of ponds and fresh climbing vines is captivating, while inside is adorned with wall art and time-stamped bricks.
A plus for the cafe is not only its beauty and tranquility, but also the absence of cigarette smoke and menu prices, with nothing exceeding 50,000 VND.
The cafe is particularly crowded on Sundays, attracting people from distant districts for various excellent reasons it offers.
Address: Tram Coffee, 132 Thong Nhat Street, Binh Tho Ward, Thu Duc.
3. Experience the student life in Thu Duc University Village
A must-visit spot in exploring Thu Duc District is the National University Village. It might not come as a surprise to many, as the residents here are primarily students. The area hosts prominent universities such as the Natural Sciences, Engineering, Social Sciences and Humanities, Law and Economics, and Medical faculties.
Additionally, there is a High School for the Gifted, also under the National University. Due to such characteristics, you'll come across numerous eateries, bookstores, cafes, clothing stores, all with 'student-friendly' prices scattered throughout.
The location is very close to the Suoi Tien tourist area and borders Dĩ An district, Binh Duong province. Hence, transportation is convenient, allowing you to easily reach many other interesting attractions.
A highlight in the University Village in recent years is the emergence of a large flea market where you can find many cheap snacks. My wife bought a dress for 40,000 VND, while my friends enjoyed delicious vegetarian rice for only 8,000 VND and a fresh beer for just 4,000 VND.
If you're traveling Saigon on a tight budget, visiting the University Village should be added to your itinerary.
Address: National University Village, 6 Linh Trung Ward, Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City.
4. Explore impressive temples
We discovered the beauty of temples in Thu Duc while driving around the western part of the district. You can combine shopping and dining with visiting the temples here.
The temples welcome visitors from 5 am to 9:30 pm. You can freely explore inside and stroll through the refreshing gardens. Besides, Thu Duc district has many other prominent temples such as An Lac, Tu Quang, Ngoc Van, and more.
Address: Van Duc Pagoda, 502 Provincial Road 43, Thu Duc District.
5. Enjoy a drink by the lakeside at dusk
Nestled within the grounds of Thu Duc University Village, Stone Lake Cafe (near the National University Guest House in Ho Chi Minh City) is located in a secluded area, right next to a charming small lake. It's a wonderful place to savor the fresh air, surrounded by the breezy atmosphere of swaying casuarina trees.
This spot is not only ideal for enjoying coffee at incredibly affordable prices, with a cup of milk coffee or a fresh coconut priced at only 12,000 VND, but also a suitable place for outdoor activities with your group on weekends. Beyond the noisy streets of Hanoi Highway, this place will be a well-deserved reward for your exploration journey.
