Embark on a journey through the Cà Ninh coconut water forest – an enticing ecological gem in Quảng Ngãi.

The Cà Ninh coconut water forest along the Cà Ninh river has been a vital livelihood for generations of locals. The people of Cà Ninh pass down songs praising the serene and tranquil natural scenery of the coconut water forest:
“Cà Ninh, a picturesque landscape,
With mountains above and water below, gracefully meanders around.”

Cà Ninh Water Coconut Forest once served as the fortress for the army and people of Binh Son district during the resistance against the United States. Today, the water coconut forest thrives with tall coconut trees creating numerous streams and canals that stretch endlessly. Spanning along a major branch of the Tra Bong River, the water coconut forest, besides its air-regulating and aquaculture-providing values, also contributes to the development of tourism services for the local people.

According to the residents of Binh Phuoc commune, this water coconut forest has a history of hundreds of years. Since ancient times, the locals have witnessed the benefits of preserving the water coconut forest for their livelihoods. They catch fish, crabs, and wade through ponds to cut each coconut leaf to weave into large sheets for roofing houses, awnings, and livestock pens. Over time, the water coconut forest remains a place of livelihood for the people, engaging in activities like weaving coconut leaves, selling coconut fruits, and rowing boats for tourists.

In the past, there was a period when Cà Ninh Water Coconut Forest suffered the most destruction from 1989 to 2001. At that time, shrimp farming was highly profitable, leading many to recklessly clear coconut trees and encroach on river areas for spontaneous shrimp farming. However, after only a few years, water pollution occurred, shrimp suffered from diseases and died. Many abandoned shrimp ponds, and the locals shifted to activities like coconut leaf weaving and mat-making. Consequently, the water coconut forest area was preserved.

Currently, the local people only harvest resources from the water coconut forest 1 to 2 times a year, from January to February and from June to August. Apart from selling coconut leaves, many families also benefit from fishing for shrimp and fish in the various streams. Water coconut trees have been intertwined with the lives of the people for generations, instilling a sense of responsibility for forest conservation among them.

Visitors to Cà Ninh Water Coconut Forest can marvel at the beauty of nature and experience various fascinating activities of the local people. These include boat rides along the canals, observing locals casting nets and fishing for shrimp and fish, and savoring the local specialties.
