The term 'Khải Đoan' is a combination of the names of King Khải Định and his consort, Queen Đoan Huy, to honor the virtues of the temple's founders.
Though the Nguyen dynasty had concluded, as Bảo Đại remained the National Chief of Vietnam, the temple was recognized as the last consecrated temple bestowed by a Vietnamese monarch. Locals also refer to this site by various names such as Tỉnh Hội Temple, Great Temple, or more elaborately, Sắc Tứ Khải Đoan Temple.
