Lai Vung Nem is crafted by the skilled hands of locals in Tan Khanh hamlet, Lai Vung, originating from the ingenious Mrs. Tu Man. She introduced this dish at local celebrations, leading to its widespread popularity. Over time, it has been passed down through generations and reached various regions through trade and exchange.
What makes Lai Vung Nem irresistible to diners is its delicious and fragrant taste. When you taste it, you'll experience a delightful blend of sweetness and tanginess, perfectly complemented by the spicy kick of chili, the tender texture of meat, and the crispy crunch of skin. The unique aroma of Lai Vung nem, enhanced by its wrapping leaves, green chilies, and garlic, along with its vibrant red color, makes it a perfect choice for weddings, housewarmings, or family gatherings. Its appealing appearance is what makes Lai Vung Nem a favorite for meals and a delightful gift for friends.
Nem-making process:
- Use pre-marinated minced meat mixed with pig skin in appropriate proportions. Then, place it into molds or use a machine to shape it to the desired size.
- Place garlic and chopped chili in the center of the nem piece, then wrap it with vong or ruot chum leaves. Next, wrap the nem into small square shapes using fresh banana leaves.
- Wrap them into cute square shapes and tie them into strings with banana or nylon strings. Lai Vung Nem from Dong Thap should be left to mature for 3-4 days in a cool place before consumption.
Lai Vung Nem is becoming increasingly popular and much easier to eat. You can enjoy it alone or with noodles, steamed rice cakes, or mix it with mango salad or coconut worms, which are also addictive to diners.
