The Genesis of the Grand Cathedral of Hanoi
The current location of the Grand Cathedral was once the site of Bao Thien Pagoda, a temple dating back to the Ly Dynasty. In the 18th century, Bao Thien Pagoda was destroyed and became a marketplace for the Dai Viet people. Subsequently, the Catholic Church was permitted by the authorities to construct the cathedral.
