Perched atop the high peak of Serra da Estrela lies Monsanto, the most charming and exceptional village in Portugal, where locals build and live in large rock formations.
Discover the Most Unique Stone Village in Portugal

According to historical records, the village of Monsanto was built centuries ago and was considered the central region of Portugal from 1174 until the 19th century.

To reach the village, travelers need to pass through a narrow road that cuts through the valley. From below, Monsanto village can be seen with its red-roofed houses amidst low trees.

Striking to visitors are the quaint houses hidden among large rock formations. Narrow paths winding through the rocks.

Monsanto presently covers an area of 131.76 km² and is home to nearly 1,000 residents. The village still maintains its uniquely ancient architectural style, which has hardly changed over hundreds of years.
Some houses are intricately carved into solid rock formations weighing up to 200 tons. Others use stone for roofs and walls. Some houses take advantage of gaps in the rock blocks to create living spaces inside.

The astonishing houses here captivate visitors with their unique charm and beauty resulting from the fusion of Manueline architecture, a composite architectural style from the 16th century.
Some houses feature doors and roofs in modern Portuguese architectural style.

Another notable feature is the remnants of ancient fortresses, serving as shelters for Lusitanian inhabitants.

The village was once voted as the “Only Village of the Portuguese in Portugal” in a national poll in 1938.
Since then, Monsanto has become a magnet for tourists, with its unique architectural beauty and breathtaking views stretching endlessly over the countryside of Portugal.
The government also restricts construction to preserve the inherent beauty of the village.

Due to the hilly terrain and narrow winding roads around large rocks, the primary mode of transportation for locals here is by mule.
