Venture into the wonders of Northwestern travel: Uncover the ancient Mường Bám tower in Sơn La

Northwestern travel boasts a myriad of attractions, from the majestic natural landscapes of mountains and forests to ancient architectural wonders steeped in significant historical and cultural value. Among them, the 500-year-old Mường Bám tower in Sơn La stands out as an artistic architectural relic built by the Lào ethnic group in the 16th century.

The Mường Bám tower, also known as the 'Lào Ban That,' is an architectural masterpiece in Lào village, Mường Bám commune, Thuận Châu district, Sơn La province, Vietnam. Constructed by the Lào ethnic community with careful site selection based on Feng Shui principles, the tower is situated on a hill covering approximately 1 hectare, about 300 meters from the Nậm Húa stream.

The complex consists of 5 towers, with a central tower and 4 surrounding towers facing the four cardinal directions – East, West, South, and North. The front of the tower faces East, overlooking the Nậm Húa stream. Mountains flank both sides to the North and South, resembling hands in a meditative pose. To the left, right, and behind the tower, a range of mountains mimics a person in a contemplative sitting position. The Mường Bám tower complex exudes a serene and majestic ambiance.

All five towers are constructed using a distinctive material, primarily red clay bricks measuring 35 cm in length, 15 cm in width, and 7 cm in thickness. They are bound together with a mixture of lime, sand, and honey. Ornate patterns are crafted using raised clay, with additional decorative terracotta shapes incorporated into the design. The Mường Bám tower is recognized as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, according to Decision No. 4064/QD-BVHTTDL dated 24/10/2012.
