When South Korea comes to mind, it's often associated with its cinema, music, beauty technology, or the beautiful island of Jeju. For travel enthusiasts seeking new experiences, the city of Busan offers a perfect blend of attractions, including Haeundae Beach, Apec Building, Taejongdae Ecological Park, and Jagalchi Fish Market. Moreover, mentioning Busan wouldn't be complete without Taegeukdo Village, renowned for its rich artistic flair and vibrant, colorful architecture.

The Artistic Haven
Taegeukdo Village, also known as the Taekwondo Village, is situated in Gamcheon 2-dong, Saha-gu, Busan. With roofs adorned in various hues - green, pink, yellow, orange - contrasting against the clear blue sky, the village is often dubbed as the 'Lego Village' or the 'Santorini of South Korea'. Established since the 1950s, it boasts around 800 colorful houses accommodating 4,000 residents. Presently, approximately 10,000 people inhabit the village regularly.

The winding streets of this affluent village in Busan are primarily composed of narrow staircases or long steep slopes. Despite being numbered from 1 to 11, first-time visitors cannot help but feel overwhelmed, as if they've stepped into a rainbow maze, with each alley leading to three or four other alleys. Nonetheless, you'll soon find yourself at ease as you wander from one alley to another, marveling at the unique architectural designs, the strikingly colorful houses, or the romantic flower-adorned railings.

The Unique Village
Despite its colorful appearance, few would suspect the dark realities of life within this village. Many residents have moved away in search of greener pastures, leaving approximately 300 vacant houses as their owners struggle to find buyers.
An elderly villager reflects on the village's poverty, evident in its dilapidated brick walls, often stained and unkempt. Just a few years ago, villagers would trek to the stream daily to fetch water. Even now, it's common to see people rushing with bundles of keys up the narrow slopes, heading to the communal restroom at the top because many families can't afford private ones.

The Thaekwondo Village is not suitable for large tour groups or noisy visitors. It's a place for those who enjoy leisurely strolls along winding paths, admiring the small details that artists have infused into their street art. Thaekwondo, with its simplicity and tranquility, offers a respite for travelers seeking solace after busy days.
