It's a little-known fact that the Japanese animated film 'Spirited Away' drew complete inspiration from the ancient town of Jiufen in Northern Taiwan.
Discover the soulful landscapes of Japan while exploring Taiwan
In 1895, Taiwan became Japan's first colony. The Japanese aimed to mold Taiwan into a prototype for all their future colonies, investing significant efforts and resources into its infrastructure and development, from its economy to its living standards. They also sought to impose their culture, promoting the use of the Japanese language. Even today, elderly Taiwanese speak fluent Japanese, referring to that era as the 'Japanese period'.

Jiufen existed long before the arrival of the Japanese. During the early years of the Qing Dynasty, it was an isolated village inhabited by only nine families, with goods delivered there evenly distributed among these families. Later, in the 1430s, the village was 'discovered' due to its gold mines. There was even a 'gold rush' in Jiufen during the Japanese occupation. All the details about the gold mines and the Japanese-style tea houses can be found in the film 'Spirited Away'.
Thanks to the 2001 release of 'Spirited Away', Jiufen began to gain recognition among tourists. Renowned Japanese anime producer Hayao Miyazaki regarded Jiufen as a source of inspiration for the entire setting of the film.

Jiufen has long been a magnet for Japanese tourists, featured prominently in magazines and travel guides about Taiwan. It has become an essential part of this region's culture and a 'must-visit' destination for Japanese travelers.
Upon arrival, you'll find yourself immersed in the peculiar scenes of the film. The dragon Haku from the movie is inspired by the dragon on the temple roof near the entrance to Jiufen. The town's features depicted in the film closely mirror reality, with bustling markets, especially at night. Every staircase, lantern, and street is portrayed just as it is in real life.
If you ever find yourself in Taipei, simply hop on a taxi or bus to get here. From MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing station, head to Exit 1, find bus #1062, and arrive at Jiufen. Whether you take a taxi or bus, they'll drop you off in front of the 7 Eleven, from where you can stroll into the alley.
