Discover Unusual Museums in South Korea
Toilet Museum Park – Suwon
In life, great ideas sometimes arise in unexpected situations, like the legendary King Sejong envisioning the Korean alphabet system while... slicing a loaf of bread. Similarly, Mr. Sim Jae Doek, former mayor of Suwon and founder of the World Toilet Association, was tasked with cleaning toilets to serve the World Cup 2002. And Mr. Sim was so obsessed that he built a house shaped like a... toilet to live in. After his passing, the house was transformed into a museum and park, where students can sit comfortably, laugh heartily, and 'pee' cleanly during their visit. Sounds intriguing, doesn't it?
The museum is open from 10 am to 6 pm.
Love Land Sex Theme Park – Jeju Island
Jeju Island is known as the perfect destination for honeymoon trips. Couples come here to light candles in romantic rooms, play sexy music, and... visit the sex theme park. Love Land simply offers you fun moments with images of penises and worships of the female reproductive organ. Of course, the museum is only open to adults.
The museum is open from 9 am until midnight, and only pre-sale tickets are available before 11 am daily.
Pig Museum – Ichoen
Located in the city of Ichoen (not the famous Incheon airport), the museum showcases artistic works featuring pigs, including many piglets and cute pig dolls. Occasionally, the pigs jump around and perform cute tricks. You can pet them and feed them. Additionally, the museum serves dishes made from pork.
The museum is open from 9 am to 6 pm, closed on Mondays.
Cuckoo Art and Crafts Museum - Gangnam, Seoul
Although not particularly significant in history, nor a beloved creature by the locals, South Korea has a museum dedicated solely to the cuckoo. It's one of the country's most unique museums, featuring over 2,000 artistic and handmade sculptures of the cuckoo.
The museum is open from 10 am to 7 pm, closed on Mondays.
Kimchi Museum - Seoul
Anyone familiar with South Korea can't miss out on mentioning kimchi. It's a traditional Korean dish present in every meal in this country. That's why South Korea is also known as the Land of Kimchi. There's a lovely little kimchi museum in the heart of Seoul, giving you an overview of the history of this traditional dish, how kimchi is made, and, especially, visitors get to eat kimchi entirely for free.
The museum welcomes visitors from 10 am to 6 pm.
Rice Cake Museum - Seoul
Tteokbokki - spicy rice cakes are one of the famous street foods in South Korea. Similar to kimchi, rice cakes hold an important place in Korean cuisine. Locals enjoy rice cakes on major holidays such as New Year's, birthdays, and harvest festivals. The rice cake museum in Seoul displays artifacts related to the long history of rice cakes, kitchens, and kitchen utensils from ancient times. The museum also regularly hosts classes instructing how to make rice cakes as well as other traditional Korean dishes.
The museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm every day.
