Situated approximately 20km west of downtown Vung Tau, the serene memorial house named after the female hero Vo Thi Sau peacefully rests along Provincial Highway 23. This house preserves artifacts and stories of the heroic young woman who sacrificed herself at the age of 19. It has become a well-known tourist spot in Vung Tau.
The Story of the Heroic Woman from Dat Do
Vung Tau tourism not only introduces visitors to scenic landmarks and beautiful beaches but also shares the story of a female hero known as Sister Vo Thi Sau. This young woman left a deep and indelible mark on the people of Dat Do and the Vietnamese nation. She is a hero who sacrificed herself at a very young age.
Vo Thi Sau was born in 1933 in Dat Do commune to a poor peasant family. Her father worked as a hired horse carriage driver, while her mother sold noodles at the Dat Do market. When Vo Thi Sau was 11 years old, the French colonialists returned to invade Ba Ria for the second time, including her homeland of Dat Do.
From a young age, witnessing the oppression of her fellow countrymen by the colonialists, this petite girl joined the revolution, fought, and was imprisoned on Con Dao. Even in her sacrifice, she held onto feelings of resentment towards the invaders, pride in her nation, and steadfast revolutionary spirit.
A Simple, Humble House
The modest memorial house of martyr Vo Thi Sau is located alongside Provincial Highway 23 in Phuoc Long Tho commune, Long Dat district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province. This house features simple architecture typical of Vietnamese rural homes, with a dirt floor and wooden walls surrounding it, topped with a tiled roof.
This Vung Tau tourist spot is rather small, measuring 10 meters long and 3 meters wide, consisting of only two small rooms. The outer room, 5 meters wide, contains an altar for ancestral worship, with a wooden bed against the right wall where Sister Sau used to sleep. The two rooms are connected by a small hallway leading to the back of the house.
Located just under 50 meters from the house is a park where the solemn statue of the female hero stands. The bronze statue, 7 meters tall, depicts Sister Sau walking confidently towards the schoolyard, with her head held high and her cloak fluttering in the wind.
Tourists visiting Vung Tau often come here to offer incense and pay tribute to Sister Sau. Beneath the statue, the scent of incense fills the air year-round, as devout visitors come to offer incense and bow respectfully before the courageous daughter of Dat Do.
It seems even the sun and wind in this land must yield to the brave daughter of the homeland. The sun continues to shine brightly, the fragrance of frangipani and orchids fills the air gently, and the hearts of visitors become solemn when standing before the reflection of Sister Sau.
After offering incense, visitors will be introduced to the house and hear touching stories about Sister Sau's life. Then, travelers from afar will be able to tour the entire memorial area, witnessing images, poems, writings about her, and items used by her family.
