Phu Quoc Tourism: Discovering 5 Pristine and Beautiful Fishing Villages
1. Ham Ninh Fishing Village
Ham Ninh Fishing Village is located on the eastern coast of the island, with lush mountains behind and vast open sea in front. Despite being several hundred meters away, the sea at Ham Ninh remains shallow. During low tide, the extensive sandy beach stretches far and wide, while during high tide, it floods the beach and reaches into the forest. The first impression upon arriving at this land is the opportunity to admire the 300m-high Ham Ninh mountain. Stacked rocks covered in moss create a misty area amidst the lush green of the mountains and the vast sea of Phu Quoc.
In the evening on Ham Ninh beach, you can admire the blue sea, with the archipelago of Pirate Islands and the faint silhouette of Nghệ Island in the distance. If you ever come here, don't forget to buy some famous fresh Ham Ninh crabs, steamed and dipped in salt and pepper, to enjoy while marveling at the beautiful golden sunlit Ham Ninh sea.
2. Cua Can Fishing Village
Located in the North and approximately 14 km from Duong Dong town, just a few kilometers from Ong Lang beach is Cua Can fishing village. Here, there are numerous wooden bridges that only allow pedestrians and motorbikes to pass. Although the fishing village is quite small, it still has some places to provide drinks and relaxation along the way before heading to the secluded beaches in the north of the island. At the southern end of the village, there is also a gas station.
If you're looking for more adventurous experiences, try convincing a local boat owner to take you out on the Cua Can river. It's a fantastic way to explore the daily life scenes of riverside residents or admire the large fishing boats returning after days of offshore fishing. In Cua Can village, there's also a beautiful but isolated sandbar in the north of the village, which you can see from the coastal road heading north to Ganh Dau and Bai Dai.
3. Ganh Dau Fishing Village
Ganh Dau is a relatively small fishing village, where you can only find basic supplies along with fuel, water, a few food items, and even a hair salon. When visiting Ganh Dau fishing village, you'll experience the simple and traditional lifestyle of the people of Phu Quoc, or witness the scenes of sun-dried anchovies ready to be processed into fish sauce, children playing around the village, and fishing boats moored in the harbor.
Visiting Ganh Dau fishing village is where you can clearly see the coastline of Cambodia just a few kilometers away. Ganh Dau owns some of the most peaceful beaches on Phu Quoc Island. These southern beaches are no longer closed to tourists as they were a few years ago (during the Khmer Rouge war era, this place was a military base for 50,000 soldiers). Here, there's the Wind Restaurant about 1 km from the fishing village and a nearby floating restaurant specializing in selling seafood at incredibly low prices.
4. Rạch Vẹm Fishing Village
Situated on the northern part of the island, Rạch Vẹm is a relatively small fishing village with 170 households, mainly engaged in net fishing. Rạch Vẹm fishing village is approximately 20 km from Duong Dong town. You can get here by motorbike or car. The scenery of the fishing village resembles a harmonious painting of nature, with a hint of sea color, a touch of sky color, plus a refreshing coolness from the gentle breeze that will make you feel incredibly comfortable.
The owner of the fish farm will take you away from the mainland on a fishing boat. After 5 minutes, you'll be standing on the pier amidst the vast sea. Standing on the bridge, you can admire the starfish through the clear water. When the famous beaches of Phu Quoc start to feel mundane, Rạch Vẹm will be the ideal place for friends to meet, laugh, and have fun in an incredibly peaceful setting.
5. Rạch Tràm Fishing Village
Getting to Rạch Tràm fishing village is not easy nowadays due to the difficult-to-find and challenging roads. However, once you're here, you can participate in exploring Rạch Tràm river, Ham Rong mountain beach with many interesting activities.
With a small wooden boat aided by oars, you'll have the opportunity to explore the pristine beauty of Rạch Tràm river, with one side being the white Tràm forest interspersed with dipterocarp trees and starfruit trees, while the other side is the mangrove forest with red mangroves protruding above the dark green water, clusters of red flowers floating on the egret and heron, and light green duckweed along the riverbank.
Explore the crossroads of Bac Cuu, where you turn along one of the two branches of the Rạch Tràm river to venture to the upper source, where the mangrove forest has gradually transformed into a forest of prickly bamboo, water chestnuts, and figs... Pause the oars to take a stroll and admire various species of wild orchids, witness the peculiar growth of jackfruit alongside ant nests, and see strange fruit dangling from ancient branches... These are experiences you'll never forget when visiting Rạch Tràm fishing village.
