Funded by a wealthy Chinese entrepreneur named Quach Dam, who resided in Vietnam, the market was constructed within 2 years and completed in 1930.

Previously, Saigon hosted the Big Market as the primary trading hub for merchants. However, with an increasing population, the market became overcrowded, prompting the authorities to plan for a new market space. Despite the challenge of finding suitable land, Quach Dam stepped in to assist. He personally financed the land acquisition until the completion of the market. Following his passing, he only requested permission from the government to construct several rows of surrounding buildings and a statue of himself.

Regarding the architecture of Binh Tay Market:
It was constructed using modern French techniques but bears the style of traditional Chinese houses with layered tiled roofs. The gently curved corners of the roofs are reminiscent of Eastern temples. The main tower of the market stands tall with a four-faced clock, allowing people from all directions to keep track of time. With 12 side gates and a main entrance facing Cho Lon Bus Station, transportation of goods is extremely convenient.

The market's unique feature is a cool, open courtyard at its center, surrounded by shopfronts. This area also hosts the statue of Quach Dam, the market's founder, and is adorned with a lotus pond, fish, and seating for visitors to rest.
Each year, Binh Tay Market attracts about 120,000 visitors for shopping and tours, facilitated by travel companies. Its strategic location for both land and water transport has made it a bustling trading hub in the Southern region to this day.
