Situated at 13 Dien Bien Phu, Ward 3, Bac Lieu City, adjacent to the Bac Lieu River, the mansion of Bac Lieu's tycoon was constructed in 1919 by a French architect when Bac Lieu's tycoon - Tran Trinh Huy - was just 19 years old. At that time, it was the grandest and most beautiful house in the six provinces of Southern Vietnam.
Architectural overview of Bac Lieu's Tycoon Mansion
More than a century has passed, yet the house still retains its beautiful basic features. The screws, bolts for construction details are all stamped with the elegant P self-characterization, clearly indicating their origin from the glamorous capital, Paris. This is quite a spacious house, formerly the most prestigious house in Bac Lieu, often referred to by locals as the 'Big House.'
The overall architectural complex consists of 2 floors with predominantly luxurious and magnificent white paint. The main materials used are cast iron, marble stones for flooring, bricks along with many decorative iron frames creating an extremely unique architectural ensemble amidst Bac Lieu City. The unique architecture of the complex bears the characteristics of French culture, representing the architectural style of old Paris that many architectural works in Vietnam still preserve.
Interior inside the mansion
The ground floor of the house consists of: 2 bedrooms, two quite spacious and luxurious halls along with the staircase leading to the upper floor. Upstairs, there are 3 bedrooms and two grand halls, with meticulous design lines, the interior of the house also exudes elegance and grandeur. The sparkling yellow lights illuminate all the rooms, giving us a cozy and comfortable feeling. Each column is also adorned with beautiful patterns.
The ancestral altar here is quite large and solemn, as if to testify to the glorious era of this most extravagant tycoon in Southern Vietnam. The staircase leading up to the upper floor is quite spacious, gracefully winding to lead visitors to explore the interesting things above.
Not only beautiful in architecture and interior design, but the house also contains many precious antique items. The exquisite artistic details crafted by talented artisans embellish the tables and chairs, making them more beautiful and distinctive. The sets of tables and chairs here are meticulously crafted and hardly found elsewhere.
Furthermore, inside the house, there are vases and tea pots decorated with dragon patterns that add vibrant colors to the mansion. The objects here are ancient and rare, although many have been lost due to wars and other reasons, the remaining items still speak of the wealth of the tycoon's family in Bac Lieu at that time.
Particularly, there's a room here called the 'tycoon's room,' because it used to be Mr. Tran Trinh Huy's room - also known as Bac Lieu's tycoon.
The room is fully equipped with a TV, air conditioner, and a writing desk. Moreover, the 'Black tycoon' also has another bedroom to add another bed, both beds are 2.5 meters long and 2 meters wide, made of huynh dan wood (ironwood) divided into hot and cold beds. The hot bed surface consists of 3 pieces of combined rosewood, used for sleeping in the rainy season. Meanwhile, the cold bed has a large piece of jade stone underneath, used for sleeping in the hot summer. The entire antique bed is meticulously carved with intricate patterns. Each of these antique beds has about 30 kg of ironwood screws (market price is currently around 200 million VND/kg). Therefore, the cost of the screws used to fasten the bed alone amounts to 6 billion VND.
Despite hundreds of years passing by, many household items have been lost due to historical upheavals, but the mansion still retains its inherent elegance, reflecting the utmost luxury of the Tran family.
