Revisiting the Acer Aspire V 13: Unveiling its Longevity and Hardware Upgrades
Windows 11 Compatibility on Acer Aspire V 13: Surpassing Minimum Requirements with Ease

Next Upgrade: 16GB RAM
You've probably guessed it already! That's right, the next upgrade is upgrading the RAM for the Acer Aspire V 13, because it's truly essential and beneficial. The reason why it's so crucial is because 'she' is a thin and power-efficient line (Intel's U series), so the RAM it uses is power-efficient DDR3L 1.35V (while DDR3 is 1.5V). At the current moment, DDR3L RAM (for laptops) is harder to find than regular DDR3, but not impossible.
So, I decided to take a risk and purchase online to maximize it to 16GB since the laptop has 2 RAM slots available. Even though I was initially worried whether the laptop would recognize 8GB modules or not because I've heard that DDR3L laptops can be quite picky with RAM, and even the seller asked about this with a worried tone. But fortune favors the prepared mind, as the laptop booted up smoothly, checked in BIOS to find it recognizing the full 16GB, then proceeded to boot into Windows and also detected the full 16GB. SUCCESS!!!
Success doesn't halt here; it catapults the boot-up speed. Windows boots up in under 10 seconds, and a hefty 20MB Excel file opens in under 5. Indeed, more RAM equals more speed. Not to mention, browsing the web disregards the need to worry about how many tabs are open. As an IT enthusiast, spinning up a few VMware virtual machines to test self-coded software is a breeze with 16GB—more than plenty. As for graphic design software, the onboard Intel HD Graphics 4400 is the limit. It handles programs like Photoshop 6.0 and SketchUp 6.0-2021 decently but can't promise more.
Slight Upgrade: 2K Monitor
Wow! I bet you didn't expect me to upgrade my screen to a fancy 2K display, did you? I just went ahead and got myself a shiny new 2K monitor and the required HDMI 2.0 cable for this upgrade.Honestly, with my Acer Aspire V 13's tiny 13.3' screen, it felt like I was squinting at ants with its measly 1366x768 resolution. A decade ago, it might have been standard, but today it's just plain painful (literally). You're pretty much limited to reading text or browsing the web with this size and resolution. If you want to code, write articles, or grade student papers... well, it's just a nightmare.
After getting and using the new 2K monitor, life has been on cloud nine. I can browse the web on one side (on the laptop screen) while organizing three work windows simultaneously (on the 2K monitor). ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!
I only regret that with the Intel Core i5-4210U CPU and Intel HD Graphics 4400, it cannot be upgraded and does not support up to 4K resolution, so I had to settle.
Ultimate Upgrade: USB PORT EXPANSION HUB
These are the real upgrades that will cost you the most but are totally worth it. Because the Acer Aspire V 13 only has a mere 2 USB ports, with 1 being 2.0 and 1 being 3.0 (TRULY PITIFUL!!!).
Having too few USB ports has been quite troublesome for me lately. Due to a malfunctioning built-in WiFi/Bluetooth card slot, I've had to resort to using external WiFi and Bluetooth USB adapters, as well as wireless keyboard and mouse. However, the comfort level with these peripherals doesn't match up to the built-in ones, making it challenging for my document editing needs. This seems to be a significant drawback across all thin and light laptops, not just Acer's. Depending on individual needs, opting for various designs and types of USB hubs could mitigate this issue, albeit with the inconvenience of carrying them around.
Personally, I've invested in both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 hubs. I use the 2.0 hub for permanently connecting the wireless mouse and keyboard receivers, along with the Bluetooth transmitter/receiver for external audio devices. As for the 3.0 hub, it's dedicated to USB drives to leverage the maximum speed of USB 3.0 (AS IT SHOULD BE!).However, Windows 11 has a drawback concerning Sleep or Hibernate mode, where USB ports continue to supply power to connected devices, resulting in increased power consumption compared to Windows 10. Nevertheless, the near-instantaneous return to the previous working state of Windows 11 compensates for this inconvenience. ACCEPTABLE!And thus concludes my reflection. At this juncture, it seems that the Acer Aspire V 13 has reached its upgrade threshold. However, I believe these current upgrades will remain viable for another 3-5 years. By then, I may still find delight in utilizing Windows 12, who knows, perhaps even Windows 13?#laptopreview
