Exploring the Contrasts between WDS Relay and WDS Remote
Wireless Distribution System, also known as WDS, allows you to create a network of Access Points without using wires.
Devices connect wirelessly. WDS devices can function as either a WDS Relay or a WDS Remote. The biggest difference between WDS Relay and WDS Remote lies in the function of each device.
A WDS Remote operates like an access point where wireless clients can connect. WDS Remote communicates with the root station and exchanges information. Whereas, WDS Relay acts solely as an intermediary between two access points. This is the difference between WDS Relay and WDS Remote that you can observe when using these standards.
The primary purpose of WDS Relay is to extend the range for WDS Remotes to reach further from the root station. This way, you have more options in placing WDS Remote devices to achieve optimal coverage. You can even use daisy chain repeater to extend the range further.
Consider the bandwidth limitations on each device placed between the client and the root station. Bandwidth is used to describe the maximum amount of data allowed to be exchanged between a website (or server) and users within a unit of time (usually a month).
If your purpose is solely internet browsing and email communication, bandwidth is sufficient. However, many devices may struggle with file transfers and bandwidth-heavy applications.
The number of devices you can connect using WDS is limited. You can connect 4 sets of WDS Relay to a root station. Then, you can connect 4 WDS Remote to a WDS Relay or Relay chain. Thus, you have 16 WDS Remote connected to 4 WDS Relay, then connected to a root station. This provides broader coverage for most devices.
Remote WDS is optimal if you want to cover larger open spaces or areas beyond the reach of WDS Relay and Remote WDS. In enclosed spaces with thick walls, it's better to use wired connections for access points due to WiFi signal interference from obstacles.
