The town of Hà Tiên (Kiên Giang) is a peculiar land, blending mountains, plains, and a harmonious coastal area. The cultural diversity of its residents adds to its uniqueness… In the past, the collapse of Phụ Island left Tử Island exposed, evoking a sense of nostalgia among the people of Kiên Giang for a landscape gradually fading away. Perhaps, nature had a slight misstep.
Embarking on a Scenic Journey to Hà Tiên
Known as a miniature Vietnam due to its diverse terrain, Hà Tiên lives up to its name. It encompasses the pristine and mythical alongside the vibrant and ancient, all coexisting with modernity. Hà Tiên is beautiful; a beauty etched in its name—familiar yet exotic, poetic yet real.
From the Tô Châu Bridge, heading towards Hà Tiên, a picturesque scene unfolds to the right with the enchanting Đông Hồ River. The image of Tô Châu Mountain reflected on the azure water slowly pours into the sea like an invitation to distant guests.
And if you travel a bit further, a picturesque panorama reveals itself, showcasing the venerable tombs and temples belonging to the Mạc family. This is the resting place of Mạc Cửu, a national founding father who contributed significantly to the development of the Hà Tiên region in the late 17th century.
Perhaps that's why, after passing away, his tomb is carved deep into a crescent-shaped mountain, the burial place crafted from limestone, sand, sugar, and asphalt in the shape of a sitting ox, a roaring dragon, and a white tiger.
About 4km north of Hà Tiên town lies Thạch Động, closely tied to the legend of Thạch Sanh Lý Thông. It's a solid limestone mountain on a nearly 100-meter high stone pedestal. The cave inside the mountain features many fantastical formations, a canvas for human imagination.
Continuing 1km from there, you'll reach the international border gate of Hà Tiên. If you don't turn towards the border gate, you'll encounter a winding road with characteristic thatched houses of the Southern countryside.
The final point of this road is Mũi Nai beach, with gentle waves and fine brown sand. Far offshore, numerous islands belong to the Bình Trị and Hải Tặc archipelagos. Across the shore, Phú Quốc island appears hazy and enchanting in the evening sky.
Located on Trần Hầu street with various interesting and unique items, Hà Tiên night market has its own charm, rustic and quaint. Along both sides of the street are a row of general stores with a colorful array of fabrics, art pieces, cosmetics, and even gold and gemstone jewelry.
Moreover, this place gathers night eateries offering dried fish rice, Nam Vang-style noodle soup, and a variety of seafood. The lively calls of pedicab drivers add to the vibrant atmosphere of Hà Tiên night street.
In the distant corner, amidst the tranquility, hidden are rustic bars offering humble delights like dried fish, sea snails, blood cockles... accompanied by coconut water, guava, and mango.
Experience the charm of sipping rice wine alongside a piece of dried black stingray fish. Spend the night with friends indulging in endless, captivating stories. Even in the cold of the border town market in the West of the Motherland, a faint glass of wine warms the heart.
Beneath the Tô Châu bridge lies a quaint Western-style establishment with a sincerely fitting name: Hiền Quán! Inside, one would immediately choose the specialty that once left international travelers in awe: frog-infused fish hotpot with bamboo shoots.
The bamboo shoots here are made from bamboo shoots, green thorns, and a bitter taste of perseverance. All combined, they create the specialty of Hà Tiên. As the night drifts away, the dawn appears near Tô Châu Bridge. Fishing boats docked along the banks, a new day has begun.
