Ngự Bình Mountain, commonly referred to as Ngự Mountain, formerly known as Hòn Mô or Núi Bằng, is a majestic landmass situated on the right bank of the Perfume River (between Hến Island and Giã Viên Island), just 4 km south of downtown Huế.
Visiting Huế to Discover Ngự Bình Mountain – A Harmonious Blend of Nature's Beauty
“Those who've ventured from South to North,
Witnessing the beauty of various places,
Though far, thoughts linger on our homeland,
Remembering the cool breeze of the Perfume River,
Remembering Ngự Bình under the clear moonlight…

For many, the romantic ambiance of the ancient capital is attributed to the Perfume River and Ngự Bình Mountain. Stretching 80km, the Perfume River meanders through dense forests and passes by Huế city.
The Perfume River flows calmly through the city, past silent ancient landmarks. Sitting on a boat, tourists admire the panoramic view of Huế, passing by Dã Viên Bridge, Phú Xuân Gate, Trường Tiền Bridge, visiting the tombs of Minh Mạng and Khải Định, Hòn Chén Palace, and Thiên Mụ Pagoda…

In the northeast of Hương Thủy, rising prominently from the flat land like a majestic barrier in front of the Imperial City of Huế, is Ngự Bình Mountain, named by Emperor Gia Long (present name), with its flat summit adorned with pine trees. From afar, Ngự Bình Peak and Tả Phù – Hữu Bật resemble a phoenix spreading its wings, guarding the royal citadel.

In 1687, Lord Nguyễn Phúc Trăn relocated the capital of Đàng Trong from Kim Long Village (Hương Trà District, Thừa Thiên Province) to Phú Xuân Village (Imperial City of Huế) and used Ngự Bình Mountain as a natural barrier. This was considered an important feng shui element by the ancients.

In later years, when Lord Nguyễn Phúc Khoát constructed Phú Xuân citadel, and King Gia Long built the Imperial City of Huế (1805), they also selected Bằng Mountain as a key feng shui element for the planned capital region.
Alongside the Perfume River, Ngự Bình Mountain stands as nature's second gift to Huế. Over time, this mountain has become a symbol whenever Huế is mentioned. Ngự Bình Mountain has a trapezoid shape, standing at 105m tall, resembling a screen in the royal court of the Nguyễn dynasty.

Ngự Bình Mountain is regarded by many as a fascinating natural spectacle. On clear days, standing atop Ngự Bình, one can admire the panoramic view of Huế city, witnessing the solemn palaces, ancient temples, and the gentle Perfume River.
From the mountain peak, a miniature painting of Huế city with its solemn palaces, ancient temples, and the tranquil Perfume River... easily comes into view. People of Huế proudly assert that the Perfume River and Ngự Bình Mountain symbolize the harmonious convergence of mountains, rivers, and land, creating an emblem of the 'Land of Perfume and Mountains'.

The beauty of Ngự Bình Mountain serves not only as a feng shui shield for the Imperial City of Huế but also fosters a close bond with the people of Huế, akin to a lofty pavilion where visitors can indulge in the scenery. From this pavilion, tourists can cast their gaze upon the entirety of the imperial capital.

With all the blessings bestowed by nature, the Perfume River – Ngự Bình duo is not only an alluring destination and a symbol of Huế but also a place nurturing spiritual life. These two scenic marvels, intertwined with each other, add an extra flavor to Huế in the eyes of those who appreciate beauty and cherish the exquisite.
