Exploring the Historical Role of Women in Traditional Society Through Selected Laments
1. Exploring the Historical Role of Women in Traditional Society Through Selected Laments, Sample #1:
Through the poignant verses of folk poetry, the vivid portraits and unfortunate fates of women in ancient society are vividly depicted.
Task:
Folk poetry resonates from the hearts of the common people. Among them, many verses express the sorrows of women, who were often disregarded in patriarchal societies with the mindset of 'men superior, women inferior.' Through these heartfelt verses depicting the plight of women in olden societies, I somewhat grasp the pain they endured.
In such societies, they were deprived of fundamental human rights. They were reduced to slaves to laws, strict constraints of feudal rituals, and outdated conservative beliefs. They had no say in their own destinies, entirely dependent on others due to the strict 'three obediences' doctrine of Confucianism: 'Serve father at home, obey husband when married, obey son when widowed.' Such constraints led to numerous miseries for women, prompting them to voice their sighs about their passive roles:

3. The Status of Women in Old Society through Some Lamenting Folk Poetry, Sample 3:
Women in ancient times lacked the right to determine their own happiness; they endured unfair treatment and had to abide by narrow-minded customs and outdated teachings.
Task:
The imagery of women and their fluctuating fate, akin to wandering souls, appears frequently in literature, especially in Vietnamese folk poetry, where authors skillfully portray this imagery, and these verses always accompany the passage of time.
Particularly, women in feudal society endured much hardship, oppression, and exploitation from the powerful class, often encountering numerous obstacles and trials in life. Despite their graceful and gentle demeanor, with pure souls and love, they were ruthlessly suppressed by brutal forces. Injustice under such a system became even more apparent under the 'men superior, women inferior' ideology, relegating women to the lowest rungs of society with no room for them to rise and fight.

4. The Status of Women in Old Society through Some Lamenting Folk Poetry, Sample 4:
The image of women in old society is mentioned in many folk verses, ancient proverbs, especially in lamenting folk poetry.
Task:
It can be asserted that the literary history of a nation is the history of its soul. The verses sung since ancient times have helped ordinary laborers express countless deeply hidden emotions. And in that colorful world of the soul, deeper still are the verses about the image of women. They are mentioned in various aspects, different angles, but it can be seen that quite frequently, they appear in lamenting folk poetry, especially in short verses beginning with the two words 'My dear':
My dear like peach blossom silk
Flaunting amidst the market, whose hands shall it fall into?
My dear like raindrops falling
Drops on the palace, drops on the fields being plowed.
My dear like a well in the path
The wise wash their faces, the ordinary wash their feet.
My dear like a floating water caltrop
Waves crash, winds blow, where will it drift?
The two words 'my dear' echo with bitterness, evoking the small, sorrowful fates of women in ancient times under feudalism. The feudal patriarchal society persisted for hundreds of years with unjust, stringent beliefs regarding women: 'Serve father at home, obey husband when married, obey son when widowed' - a fate entirely dependent.
