Have you ever delved into the history of Pizza? Let's embark on a journey with PasGo to uncover the story behind this iconic dish.
When it comes to Italian cuisine, most people immediately think of pizza. But few know where this familiar dish originated, why Italians love it so much, and how pizza has evolved over time.
The 'ancestor' of Pizza dates back to the Stone Age, stemming from pieces of dry bread baked on hot stones leftover from fires. To utilize leftover foods, people began topping the bread and eating it. This is why Italians consider pizza an economical and incredibly convenient dish, a true 'fast food' staple.

Modern pizza emerged in 1889 when Queen Margherita Teresa Giovanni, the queen consort of King Umberto I of Italy, visited Naples. Raffaele Esposito, the owner of the Pietro Il Pizzaiolo tavern, was asked to prepare a special dish to welcome the queen. Esposito made a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese (a type of cheese made from buffalo milk), and basil, ingredients that created the colors of the Italian flag: red, white, and green. He named the pizza Margherita. Subsequently, Italians in other regions came up with different toppings, creating pizzas with unique regional characteristics.

By the early 20th century, pizza accompanied Italian immigrants to America. In 1905, an Italian-American named Gennaro Lombardi opened the first American-style pizza shop in New York. Also in the United States, pizza became a fast food delivered to homes. This style quickly became the most familiar image worldwide, especially after 1945. During World War II, soldiers from Britain, France, and America for various reasons were stationed in Italy. Upon their return, they brought back native pizza-making methods and often opened pizza shops with American-style home delivery. To this day, pizza is present in most countries worldwide. In each place, people create unique culinary characteristics for their pizzas.
