1. Introduction to RO and Nano water filters
If you want to know which water filter is best for your family, RO or Nano, first learn about these 2 filtering technologies.
1.1 RO water filter
RO water filtration technology utilizes a filtration system with RO membrane filters. These filters have ultra-small pores, only 0.001 micrometers in size. With this size, RO water filters clean up to 99.99% of bacteria, dirt, and harmful heavy metals.
Water filtration experts advise that water filtered by RO water filters can be used directly from the faucet without boiling, saving electricity for your household.
1.2 Nano water filter
Water filters utilizing Nano filtration technology are also very popular nowadays. This technology uses filters with larger pores compared to RO technology, so in addition to the ability to purify, it helps retain minerals for the body. This type of water filter can operate without electricity and has no wastewater.
Guidance on purchasing water filters: should you buy an RO or Nano water filter?2. Structure of RO and Nano water filtration technology
2.1 Structure of RO water filter
A standard RO water filter typically has 5 filter cores, operating in a closed-loop process. Manufacturers may design different products with varying core numbers based on demand, but they must not be fewer than this standard number.
Usually, when the source water enters, it undergoes treatment through the first 3 cores (which may consist of 3 rough cores or cores with activated carbon depending on the type). It then passes through the RO core and finally the functional core to produce clean and pure water.
- Core 1 (PPE): Made from coarse PP fibers tightly packed together with slots smaller than 5 micrometers
- Core 2 (UDF-GAC): typically contains granular activated carbon
- Core 3 (CTO): usually contains finely ground activated carbon powder compacted into blocks
- Core 4: the RO membrane core with pores only 0.001 micrometers in size, completely filtering out dirt and bacteria. This is considered the 'heart' of the RO water filter
- Core 5: contains durable Carbon components
- Pressure tank: stores purified water after filtration to sterilize it with the external environment
- Electronic valve: prevents free passage of water and helps smooth operation of the machine
- Low-pressure valve: used to cut off power when the source water is low or weak, or when the filter core is too dirty, causing blockage of the machine
- High-pressure valve: automatically cuts off power when the pressure tank is full
- Waste water valve: allows waste water to flow out.
This is the basic structure of an RO water filter. Looking at the structure, you can see that the incoming water is carefully processed through many stages to provide the cleanest water. This is also the advantage of RO water filters that influences users' decisions on which water filter to purchase.
Current structure of RO water filters2.2 Structure of Nano water filters
A standard Nano water filter also needs to have a standard structure. The most important aspect is the 5 filter cores. So how does this structure differ from that of an RO machine?
- Core 1: Nano fiber core made from compressed cotton fibers with 5-micron pores, diameter 67mm.
- Core 2: Nano fiber core made from compressed cotton fibers with 5-micron pores, diameter 65mm.
- Core 3: Antibacterial carbon core made from compressed activated carbon. The outer layer of core 3 is covered by a layer of silver-coated fiber membrane with antibacterial properties.
- Core 4: Contains Nano Silver membrane made from compressed activated carbon with pores only 0.01 microns in size. The outer layer of core 4 is coated with Nano silver from the US. This core effectively removes 100% of bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals, pollutants, etc.
- Core 5: Cation core consisting of Cation beads and mineral stones to soften water and ensure pH balance in water.
In addition to these 5 filter cores, Nano water filters also contain valves and necessary auxiliary components for optimal operation. If you want to know more details, you can request information from water filter consultants.
Current structure of Nano water filters3. Pros and cons of RO and Nano water filters
3.1 RO water filter
- Advantages
RO water filters stand out with their small RO membrane pores, only 0.001 micrometers, so they can remove up to 99.99% of bacteria, dirt, fungi, heavy metals, excess pesticides, or other harmful substances in the source water. Moreover, it can turn salty water into fresh water through the saline water filter. The filtered water has a pure taste and can be consumed directly from the source without boiling.
You can consider some high-quality RO water filters such as: tabletop AO. Smith Z4 water filter, integrated hot and cold RO water filter Sunhouse SHR76210CK, 7-core RO water filter KG104…
- Disadvantages
A drawback that many people often encounter when researching which water filter to buy is that this type of machine may remove essential minerals needed for the body. If used for a long time, the body will lack some types of minerals, which is not good for health. In addition, the machine can only be used when there is electricity. After filtering a large amount of waste water, if it is not utilized, it will be very wasteful.
3.2 Nano water filter
- Advantages
A prominent advantage of Nano water filters that you may hear in any water filter purchasing advice is that they do not require electricity, produce no wastewater, and overcome the limitations of RO water filters. Additionally, Nano filter cores are larger than RO filter cores, so they can effectively purify while retaining essential minerals for the body. Water can also be consumed directly from the source without boiling.
- Disadvantages
However, the machine is not without its drawbacks, such as: poor ability to filter water containing heavy metals, poor ability to filter lime, and inability to filter salty water.
These are useful information for those who are unsure which water filter to buy: RO or Nano. In general, each type of machine has its own prominent advantages and disadvantages, as long as you regularly clean the water filter, its lifespan will increase regardless of the type of machine.
