Meanwhile, there was Mai Thi Trau, a charming maiden with a knack for poetry and prose, matching Cau in talent.
Impressed by his talents, the two fell in love. However, when Cau sought his parents' blessing to marry Trau, he discovered she was his half-sister. Heartbroken and disillusioned, Cau quietly left his homeland, drifting to an island miles away, now known as Hon Cau. Trau, upon learning of Cau's departure and her true lineage, succumbed to despair, finding her final rest at Dam Trau Beach.

In the early 20th century, French colonialists used Con Dao as a place to imprison patriotic revolutionaries, including Prime Minister Pham Van Dong who was held captive during 1930 – 1931.
