Based on a true story, a group of war prisoners escapes from the Stalag Luft North prison camp. They organize the largest-scale escape in the history of war prisons led by Tom, Dick, and Harry. The first half of the film plays like a comedy as the prisoners mainly deceive the guards to dig tunnels for their escape route to the edge of the forest—where the German army cannot catch them. The film tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss, a conscientious objector. At the Battle of Okinawa, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his incredible courage and care for his comrades.
