Deep in my thoughts, I anticipated a bulkier 600mm lens, but the Nikkor Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S pleasantly surprised me with its compactness.
Despite knowing it weighs only 1.390kg, making it the lightest lens in the 600mm segment, when held, it feels much lighter than expected, surpassing my initial imagination.Nikon's structural changes have likely contributed to this, redirecting the lens weight closer to the camera body for better balance and control, particularly beneficial for sports, automotive, or birding photographers requiring swift movements.
Despite being touted as significantly compact, 287mm still appears large for casual photographers.
Optically, it houses 21 lenses arranged in 14 groups with aperture ranging from f/6.3 to f/32 via 9 rounded diaphragm blades. Additionally, this product utilizes Phase Fresnel (PF) lenses, reducing both size and vibration significantly, in conjunction with in-body stabilization.
Naturally, a top-notch Nikon lens wouldn't be complete without a nano-coating layer to reduce ghosting and flare.
Nikon describes the VR S autofocus system as one of the quietest and fastest they've ever produced, making focus breathing hardly noticeable.
With 11 Z-mount contacts, this lens seamlessly integrates with Nikon's Z-mount system, and it also performs flawlessly with 1.4X or 2.0X converters, allowing photographers to easily transform it into 840mm or 1200mm focal lengths.

Familiar toggle buttons like AF/MF or focus distance selector.
The lens name on the top along with the stylish silver Nikkor logo. However, the entire outer casing of the lens is made of plastic.
Detachable tripod mount.
You can rotate this knob on the socket kit to switch the orientation of your photos from portrait to landscape and vice versa when mounted on a tripod.
The hood section is manufactured in China, I'm not too fond of it, and its quality isn't that great either, it feels soft and rubbery.
The lens itself is also made in China. While the front and rear caps are made in Thailand.
