The Yamaha MT-07 (2021-2022) was introduced alongside the new MT-09 in 2020, both sharing remarkably similar aesthetics. The 2022 version represents a complete overhaul, boasting a more rugged and contemporary design. Since 2013, approximately 250,000 units of the MT series have been sold in Europe, with half of them being MT-07s.The MT-07 has always been hailed as the frontrunner in the mid-range segment. However, Yamaha understands the need to stay dynamic in a market where new contenders like the Triumph Trident 660 or the Honda CB650R are emerging. In the Vietnamese market, the competitive pricing of all three bikes always sparks curiosity. The MT-07 is priced at 259 million VND, the CB650R at 246.5 million VND, and the higher-end Trident 660 positioned at 275 million VND.
Design
Some say the front design resembles a robot, while others liken it to a horsefly. Overall, it exudes a strong personality. The lighting system performs well, especially the main headlight with its even and wide coverage, though the high beam tends to concentrate towards the center, suggesting additional auxiliary lights for a more comfortable touring experience. The air intakes on the two plastic fairings near the front of the bike enhance aerodynamics and add a muscular element to its appearance. The turn signals are positioned separately on each side. Initially seeming a bit disjointed, they integrate harmoniously upon closer inspection. These are LED lights, consistent with other naked bike models from Yamaha, such as the MT-03. Viewed from the side, the Yamaha MT-07 2022 stands out with its frame, mechanical details, and a sizable 14-liter fuel tank. The rear of the bike features a distinctive Y-shaped tail light and separate turn signals on each side.Another distinctive feature in terms of exterior design is the speedometer, which has been upgraded to a monochrome LCD hexagonal display. Positioned boldly in the center of the handlebars, the speedometer adds to the bike's rebellious character. It provides all the necessary information for operating the vehicle, including speed, gear, RPM, and time.
Frame and Suspension System
The latest Yamaha MT-07 retains the diamond frame setup and suspension system from the 2018 model. Yamaha's approach to the frame system is quite ingenious, with steel tubes of varying thickness and length, reinforced by the engine itself to bear the load. This ensures both stability and optimal weight distribution for the bike. Specifically, the MT-07 weighs only 184 kg, significantly lighter than its competitors. As a result, the power-to-weight ratio of the bike is improved for better acceleration performance, also aiding in easier handling and maneuvering for less experienced riders. The seat height of the bike reaches 805 mm, allowing for comfortable footing even for someone with a height of 1.68 meters, without feeling too stretched. Sitting on the bike, the riding posture of the MT-07 is quite relaxed, without leaning too far forward. With a wheelbase length of 1,400 mm, the bike is not overly large or cumbersome. However, a drawback of the soft suspension system is that when cornering at high speeds, the body of the bike tends to lean slightly to one side, causing imbalance. In such situations, a wrong maneuver could lead to significant issues. This is something to be mindful of for bikes with soft suspension systems in general. Nevertheless, for personal preferences and less aggressive riding styles, I prefer the softer suspension on the Yamaha MT-07 over stiffer, sport-oriented suspensions. The MT-07 is equipped with tires designed primarily for urban commuting, so if taken onto gravel roads, its lack of grip becomes immediately noticeable. However, in city conditions and on regular asphalt roads, the tires provide good traction. Both front and rear wheels have a size of 17 inches.
Engine Power
The 2022 Yamaha MT-07 is still equipped with the Crossplane 2-cylinder, DOHC, liquid-cooled 689cc engine. This engine is capable of producing a maximum power of 73 horsepower at 8,750 rpm, while the maximum torque is 67 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Compared to the previous generation, there aren't many differences in the engine. Most of the internal tweaks are aimed at meeting Euro 5 regulations, including a new intake system with shorter intakes and redesigned exhaust pipes with a larger catalytic converter.Additionally, the exhaust valve seats are made of a higher cobalt alloy to withstand higher temperatures, and the clearance between the gears on the second and third gears has been reduced by about 5% to reduce friction during operation. The MT-07 or MT-09 can be rightfully hailed as deserving of the MT - Master of Torque moniker bestowed upon them by the manufacturer. The bike's torque comes from very early revs. Just hop on the bike, shift gears, twist the throttle, and you immediately feel the powerful pull of the bike. This isn't just thanks to the CP2 engine but also the relatively light weight of the bike.Compared to other competitors, the maximum power of the engine isn't particularly outstanding, but the maximum torque is the MT-07's standout factor. The bike's pull is maintained across various gears and RPM ranges; when cruising at over 60 km/h, if you need a bit more speed to overtake, just a little throttle input and the engine instantly responds, providing you with a strong pull forward. It's truly a fantastic sensation the bike delivers. However, when compared to its bigger sibling, the MT-10, regarding the gearbox, the MT-07 only scores about 6.5 out of 10. Shifting gears on the bike encounters some noticeable hesitation rather than being as smooth as on the MT-10. Initially, this may leave you feeling slightly disappointed with the bike. But once you get used to it, it's not a significant issue anymore. However, if smooth gear shifting is a priority, the MT-07 isn't quite up to par in this regard. Another plus point of the bike is its effectiveness in dealing with traffic jams; its cooling efficiency is quite good. Of course, it does get hot, but it's at an acceptable level, not uncomfortably unbearable.
Safety Technology
Essential for restraining a high-power bike like the Yamaha MT-07 is a sufficiently good braking system, along with safety technologies. The MT-07 is equipped with dual 298mm front disc brakes, an improvement over previous models. The rear brake is a single 245mm disc. Both front and rear brakes are equipped with ABS technology. That's all the MT-07 offers in terms of technology. No slipper clutch, no riding modes, no traction control... all of which are quite basic features for sporty naked bikes in general.
The absence of a Slipper Clutch made me realize the importance of this technology, especially for those who often engine brake like myself. The MT-07 accelerates rapidly; just a slight twist of the throttle and the bike reaches quite a high speed. If you accidentally downshift too quickly to reduce speed for whatever reason, you'll undoubtedly experience rear wheel lock-up. Thanks to this sensation, I've started relying more on brakes in urgent situations, and I think that's a better habit. First, brake to reduce the speed of the bike to an appropriate level, then downshift to match the speed. To be honest, 43% of those who seek out the MT-07 are experienced riders. Having experienced this bike myself, I somewhat understand the reasoning behind that figure. Overall, the MT-07 is a pure mechanical marvel, suitable for those in need of a powerful ride with basic safety features and minimal intervention from assistive technologies.
