Domestic ducks trace their origins back to the Mallard species (the ancestor of all domestic duck breeds), appearing in ponds and marshes in Asia. They have been present in Southeast Asia for thousands of years, domesticated by humans for food and feathers. Like their relatives, swans, geese, and other ducks, they belong to the waterfowl group (aquatic birds that feed underwater), distinguishing them from other poultry such as birds and chickens. The scientific name for ducks is Anas platyrhynchos domesticus, belonging to the Duck family (Anatidae), Goose order (Anseriformes). In Vietnam, the most common is the grass duck, also known as the free-range duck.
