With modern tastes and the need to improve human quality of life, many species of wildlife are being domesticated and exploited. No exception, rabbits are being used by humans to serve their lives due to their useful and common characteristics.
Rabbits are a common mammal species, kept in captivity, released, or living wild in forests. They have thick fur, suitable for living in temperate and cold climates. Rabbits were first known to humans in Europe, about 1000 years BC. Rabbits are classified into seven species, such as European wild rabbits, cottontails, dwarf rabbits, etc. Their lifespan ranges from four to ten years, with a gestation period of 31 days. Domestic rabbits are usually weaker than wild rabbits, domesticated, and kept in large cages to avoid being hunted by predators.
In terms of structure, rabbits are quadrupedal animals, swift runners, with thick, soft, warm fur, usually white, black, or brown-yellow in color. Their ears are long, capturing signals very well. When hunting, rabbits often erect their ears to listen to sound movements. During rest, their ears fold down along the length of their body. Rabbit eyes are typically red, black, or brown, clearly visible in normal light conditions, with active tear glands, suitable for survival on land. Their noses are small and capable of sniffing. They have sharp incisor teeth with two main front teeth, sharp, pointed, and long due to their habit of gnawing. Rabbits often have a burrowing habit, making burrows for nesting and living.
Rabbits belong to the herbivorous animal group. Their nutritional needs consist of clean water and vegetation such as cabbage, kale, and other green fruits. Contrary to popular belief, rabbits do not frequently enjoy eating carrots because this food is high in sugar and too hard. They often use carrots as a tool to grind their front teeth. Rabbits are cold-loving animals, living in cool temperatures, from 10 - 25 degrees, which is the most suitable temperature for rabbit growth and activity.
Rabbits play a significant role in both the processing industry and the fashion and pharmaceutical industries. Rabbits are hunted or raised for meat. Rabbit skin is used to make garments or accessories such as hats and scarves. Rabbit fur attached to clothing adds a touch of luxury for the wearer. Rabbit waste is also a good type of fertilizer for crops. Rabbit milk is used for medicine or processed into nutritious food. Rabbit meat is used as food or soaked in alcohol. Dishes made from rabbit meat are very attractive and nutritious, with high economic value. In addition, in medicine, rabbits are used as experimental animals for vaccines or cosmetic test samples. However, testing on these animals is being condemned for being inhumane and harmful to the natural rabbit population in the environment.
In terms of spiritual value, rabbits are cute-looking animals with soft fur, so they are often kept as pets in zoos or as pets in families. In Chinese culture, rabbits are one of the twelve zodiac signs representing twelve years old. Rabbits symbolize femininity, gentleness, and loveliness, so they are often stylized as gifts or decorations for girls. However, rabbits are a species that causes disease outbreaks and crop damage due to their gnawing habit. In Australia, traps are set and rabbits are exterminated to prevent adverse effects on the environment.
Rabbits remain a familiar species exploited to meet human needs. Captive breeding and controlling rabbit populations are the best ways to sustain the survival of these animals while minimizing their negative impact on the natural environment.
