Prompt: Express your reasons for enjoying reading books
Response:
In everyone's life, there exists a unique passion or, as commonly known, a profound interest—a fervor that defines them. Some are passionate about football, badminton, while others find joy in raising ornamental birds, keeping fish, or indulging in travel. The array is endless, as anything can become someone's hobby. Personally, I am deeply fond of reading, whether it's comics, novels, historical, or scientific books—I find excitement in exploring them all.
Similar to many other kids, I occasionally received a few spare dollars from my parents. While most used them for snacks, I saved up to buy books. Sometimes it took months to afford a favorite book. I can't recall exactly when my love for books began, but I remember my mom buying me Tô Hoài's adventure tale, 'Dế mèn phiêu lưu ký.' Since then, my dedication to reading has only grown stronger.
For me, books are intimate companions and cherished confidantes. They evoke unfamiliar emotions—joy, deep sadness, and even peculiar thoughts previously unknown to me. Books are an entire world waiting for me to explore. Every day, just reading one page unveils new perspectives and theoretical experiences. It broadens my horizons. Consider this: if you yearn to travel but lack the means, a book about travel could be a worthy alternative. It not only enriches your knowledge but also provides intriguing insights into places you've never been.
Books can be considered a soulful intellectual feast with an affordable price tag, offering a full range of aromas and flavors. Compared to other forms of entertainment, books are a reasonable and captivating choice. I haven't even touched upon valuable literary works with profound ideas and profound content. A simple short story with a plot and content that sparks a few moments of contemplation is more than satisfying. This contributes significantly to enriching our souls, adding depth to our beings. It plays a crucial role in developing the so-called 'soft skills,' an aspect many young individuals lack or have yet to attain.
Books serve as a means to purify our souls, aiding us in cultivating tranquility and reducing anger. Reading instills in us the habit of carefully contemplating various matters, contributing to the nurturing of a wholesome inner self. Particularly during the student years, straddling the threshold between childhood and adulthood, thoughts lacking depth and sudden outbursts often occur as regularly as daily meals.
Furthermore, reading extends beyond the confines of just perusing 'books'; it includes reading newspapers, magazines, and other valuable sources, keeping us updated on essential information for daily life. I don't advocate solely reading extensively printed and reprinted books because, simply put, while they are beneficial, they may not provide the timely and necessary information that is relevant today.
That's about reading wholesome books; we can see numerous benefits. However, a common misconception is that every book is good and beneficial. This is a fallacy as the market is flooded with books deemed 'trash' for offering no value and, in some cases, even promoting negative thoughts that erode human character. This warns us to exercise caution and research before diving into a book. Additionally, many avid readers become so engrossed that they forget to eat and sleep—a mistake, as reading is meant to seep slowly into the soul rather than cramming, ultimately leaving a hollow number and excessive immersion into books that obscures reality.
Above are some of my perspectives on the right way to read. Please remember, a book can be a friend, but it is not everything. Authors infuse their personal 'self' into their writing, making it impossible to maintain an objective and comprehensive view. We must strike a balance between reading and social interaction to develop ourselves in the most holistic way. Happy reading, everyone!
