The societal development has posed many complex issues in the lives of individuals, especially for the younger generation. One of the current concerns is the thoughts and perspectives of young people on happiness and joy. These beliefs about happiness contribute to shaping and significantly influencing the lifestyle of adolescents and students.
As we know, happiness is a mental state that reflects the joy, satisfaction, and contentment of an individual when their needs and desires are fulfilled. The youth, in general, are a group characterized by passion, health, and agility in accessing and grasping knowledge and information. Nowadays, alongside societal progress, the youth hold diverse beliefs and thoughts on the abstract concept of happiness.
In today's reality, many young people continuously dedicate themselves to the noble lifestyle of 'Self for Others' and hold the belief that happiness comes from 'giving.' These are the voluntary youth wearing the green volunteer shirts, participating in support programs, helping the poor, or willingly going to remote villages to impart knowledge to children from ethnic minorities. These are the students who persistently strive in their studies to join competitions such as Young Innovation, Robocon, asserting Vietnam's intellectual position on the international stage. These are the young individuals always ready to contribute their energy and talents to help those facing difficulties and adversities. This stems from their belief that happiness lies in small, simple things, leading them to appreciate what they have and consistently strive for the future ahead. Simultaneously, they see happiness as something they create for themselves.
However, alongside those who hold positive views on happiness, nowadays, there are quite a few young people with a negative and distorted perspective on this concept. The societal development and the explosion of information technology have led many youth into a lifestyle of indulgence, pleasure, and competition. They get caught up in extravagant online games, immerse themselves in a debauched lifestyle, considering it as genuine happiness, forgetting the joy that comes from efforts and struggles in real life. Or there are those who see happiness as something bought with money, leading to a pragmatic and competitive lifestyle, selfishly thinking only of personal benefits with the motto 'others for me.' These individuals excessively prioritize the value of money, forgetting the happiness they already possess.
Through the analysis, we can see that nowadays, the youth have various beliefs about happiness. This arises from the fact that happiness is an abstract concept in the realm of the mind, depending on individuals' different ideals and life purposes. Particularly, societal development and complexity contribute to these distorted views on happiness.
To seek genuine and true happiness, we need to establish correct beliefs about happiness. Simultaneously, exert effort and create joy for ourselves without relying on the hope of being 'given back' happiness by others. In particular, the younger generation needs to cultivate a healthy, positive lifestyle and stay away from the indulgent, pleasure-seeking lifestyle to avoid falling into social vices.
The youth and their beliefs about happiness may seem like a seemingly simple issue but carry significant importance. This is the generation with influence and determination for the future of the country. As students sitting in the classroom, we need to strive in our studies and form positive beliefs about joy and happiness.
