Expressing Thoughts on the Tale of Sơn Tinh, Thủy Tinh
Essay:
Everyone's childhood is inevitably intertwined with fairy tales, legends, or myths—a crucial part of the spiritual life of the Vietnamese. These narratives, crafted by the people, aim to explain mysterious natural phenomena and reflect the dreams and aspirations of individuals regarding justice and humanity's ability to control nature. Sơn Tinh Thủy Tinh is an extraordinary legend depicting the battle between two deities, vividly portraying the harsh nature of annual floods and storms in our country.
Thousands of years ago, as the Vietnamese people migrated from the mountains to the plains, annual floods and disasters occurred. In early July, the stormy rainy season arrived, causing water from rivers and lakes to rise, flooding villages and homes. However, the towering hills remained untouched; after the flood season, the rivers and lakes returned to tranquility. Despite the ruthless nature, with their imaginative minds, the people believed it was a battle between two gods settling an ancient feud.
Legend has it that the eighteenth Hung king had a beautiful daughter ready for marriage. The king ordered a search for a talented man to be her husband. Two young men sought to marry Mỵ Nương. Both were handsome and had magical abilities. One was Sơn Tinh - the God of Tản Viên Mountain (Saint Tản), and the other was Thủy Tinh (Water Deity). Sơn Tinh pointed, and wherever he did, lush forests grew, filled with wild animals. Thủy Tinh had the power to summon rain and call the wind; a wave of his hand would make water rise thousands of feet, creating waves and currents across the water. Both were exceptionally talented, leaving the king unsure of whom to choose. He decided to let fate decide and set a challenge for the next day, with ample offerings: one hundred servings of sticky rice, one hundred pieces of square sticky rice cake, nine-ivory elephants, nine-cubit chickens, nine-red-mane horses, each in pairs. The king's challenges were all treasures from the mountains and forests. In this contest, the king seemed to favor Sơn Tinh, recognizing his sincerity and heroic demeanor.
The Next Morning, Thuỷ Tinh arrived early with all the offerings and escorted Mỵ Nương back to the mountain. Busy searching for offerings, Sơn Tinh arrived late and failed to marry the princess. Outraged, he swiftly pursued to reclaim Mỵ Nương. The two gods engaged in an epic battle, darkening the skies and shaking the earth. Thuỷ Tinh raised the water to drown Sơn Tinh, but for every rise in water, Sơn Tinh elevated the mountains. In the end, unable to defeat Sơn Tinh, Thuỷ Tinh retreated. However, fueled by ancient grudges, every lunar July, Thuỷ Tinh sent his forces to challenge Sơn Tinh. The battle of Sơn Tinh, Thuỷ Tinh caused countless grievances for the people, submerging homes, crops, and livestock, creating a yearly struggle against the wrath of Thuỷ Tinh.
This is a captivating and meaningful story. Through the clash of the two deities, the folk author clearly expressed the people's dreams of justice, righteousness, and the triumph of good over evil. Despite having countless magical powers, Thuỷ Tinh couldn't overcome Sơn Tinh because, from time immemorial, the virtuous are always protected by the heavens. Simultaneously, the story portrays the spirit and fighting will of our people in the face of adversity. No matter how fierce nature may be, it will always succumb to the resilient strength of humanity. With creativity and rich imagination, the people have crafted a story that is fictional and fantastical yet uniquely interesting. In ancient times, when science couldn't explain natural phenomena, humans used stories to interpret and make life more intriguing.
Sơn Tinh Thuỷ Tinh is a fictional story cleverly incorporating real historical details such as King Hùng and Mỵ Nương, enhancing its allure and captivating readers. This 'half-fiction, half-truth' tale profoundly conveys a message: Humans will never retreat before the harshness of nature, always asserting control over their destiny in every difficult circumstance. Even if Thuỷ Tinh raises the water as high as he wants, Sơn Tinh will fill it with rocks.
The legend of Sơn Tinh Thuỷ Tinh vividly portrays the arduous struggles of our people. Despite annual storms and floods, we steadfastly face challenges, overcoming natural disasters. Even today, the story maintains its value, reminding future generations to continue preserving the traditions of righteousness and courage in the face of life's adversities.
