Facebook is shutting down its two under-the-radar apps, essentially mimics of well-known concepts in the market. Although Lasso appears to be more famous than Hobbi, it still didn't generate much buzz, which is why Facebook has decided to 'pull the plug' on them to promote Reels, a feature similar to TikTok on Instagram.

In late 2018, Facebook unleashed Lasso to compete with the Chinese-originated video-sharing social platform, TikTok. This short-video sharing app supported both iOS and Android platforms, allowing users to record videos up to 15 seconds long, add music, and share them with others. Lasso targeted users in the US and some Latin American countries, never expanding beyond these regions. Another experimental app by Facebook, Hobbi, also fades into obscurity.
Introduced earlier this year, Hobbi was touted as a video and photo-sharing app to catalog users' projects and personal interests. While it bears similarities to Pinterest, according to the company, it was 'crafted' to help users categorize projects into themed collections.
'There's no social networking aspect to the app other than the ability to create standout videos to share with friends after completing your project. In that sense, Hobbi is more like an organizer and editor than a new social media platform.'
When will Facebook sunset Lasso and Hobbi?
Facebook has confirmed both Lasso and Hobbi will cease operations on 10/7/2020. Lasso was the more popular of the two apps. This might explain why Facebook will focus on its successor, a feature on Instagram called Reels.
Released late last year in Brazil, Reels made its debut in Germany and France, with the company planning to roll out this feature more extensively in the near future.
